State rep nominee arrested on charge

Environmental activist and political candidate Charles E. Morgan of Freestone county was arrested last week on a misdemeanor harassment charge for allegedly threatening an Anadarko Petroleum employee.

Morgan was arrested at his home near Lanely by Freestone county deputies on a warrant issued by County Judge Linda Grant.

He spent the night in jail before bonding out Friday morning for $1,500.

Morgan is the Democratic Party nominee for state representative in District 8 and executive director of Citizens for Environmental Clean-Up.

The misdemeanor harassment charge alleges that the CEC executive threatened to take a gun to the residence of Kelly Hutchinson who supervises natural gas compressor stations in the area.

The threatening telephone call was reportedly made on Aug. 23, 2009, and was recorded.

Over the past few years, Morgan has appeared repeatedly before Freestone county commissioners requesting that the county install an air monitor to measure air quality and to address concerns about low frequency noise.

The Freestone county man contends that natural gas compressor stations emit low frequency noise that can cause a laundry list of health problems.

Among the health hazards are sleep deprivation, brain damage, heart attack, sexual dysfunction, vertigo, nausea and head pain.

Morgan also has stated publicly that he has been hospitalized on several occasions from the effects of low frequency noise.

Freestone County Sheriff’s Office Investigator Thomas Hendrix reports that, prior to the Aug. 23 telephone call, Morgan contacted Anadarko more than 400 times with complaints.

Hendrix also says that the company had a telephone line and answering machine installed to field the complaints, but that the Freestone county man utilized the designated line infrequently, preferring to speak directly with Anadarko personnel.

Morgan’s house is located about a mile from an Anadarko compressor station, the deputy says.

The Freestone county man ran unopposed in the Democratic Primary for the party’s nomination as state representative and faces Republican incumbent state Rep. Byron Cook in the November general election.
