Shotgun blast wounds man Monday night

A long running family dispute led to a couple of shotgun blasts that sent a Freestone county man to a Tyler hospital Monday evening.

Wounded with pellets to a leg and finger is Kevin Miller, 57.

Freestone County Sheriff Ralph Billings reports that Miller was shot by Art Gray, 78, who is Miller’s former father-inlaw.

Deputies were investigating the incident Tuesday and an arrest has not been made.

The incident occurred shortly before 7 p.m. Monday on FCR 192 near the Southern Oaks subdivision at Richland-Chambers Reservoir.

Billings reports that Gray and his daughter, Tonya, who is divorced from Miller, were moving some items of which the 57-year-old laid claim.

While the Grays were at work, Miller drove up and may have tried to strike his former father-in-law with a vehicle, the sheriff says.

Gray fired a blast from a shotgun into the left rear tire of Miller’s vehicle, and when Miller exited the vehicle he was shot in the leg, Billings says.

A 9-1-1 emergency call was made to the sheriff’s office at 6:48 p.m. by Tonya Gray reporting the incident.

Southern Oaks Volunteer Fire Department and Fairfield Emergency Medical Service responded to the call, and Miller was loaded aboard a medical helicopter for a flight to Tyler for treatment of his wounds.

Deputies were interviewing all parties Tuesday to piece together an accu- rate account of what happened.

A petition was filed in late 2007 by Tonya Gray (then Miller) seeking a divorce from Miller, which was granted Dec. 11, 2009.

Miller was indicted in October 2007 by a Freestone county grand jury on felony charges of aggravated assault and criminal mischief in connection with an Aug. 3, 2007, incident in which Tonya Gray was struck and a vehicle owned by Jason Strawn was vandalized.

The 57-year-old was convicted Jan. 26, 2010, on both charges and sentenced to serve probation in lieu of reporting to prison or state jail. He has appealed both convictions.
