Balloons released for special month

Balloons were released on the courthouse square after commissioners court adjourned Monday morning. The number of balloons released---15---represents the number of children currently being cared for by Freestone county Child Protective Services.

County officials and members of the CPS board released the balloons to commemorate April as Child Abuse Awareness month.

County Government Month is also celebrated in April and Freestone county commissioners adopted a resolution making that declaration at their regular meeting held Monday morning.

Freestone county judge Linda Grant asked commissioners to consider hosting a "county day" this month, on a date to be determined, that will be open to the public.

"It could be a real fun day," she said.

Activities would include tours of the courthouse, and all elected officials would be present to answer questions from visitors. Commissioners could bring equipment for display on the square, and refreshments would be served.

Commissioners agreed, and a date will be selected.

County government is the oldest form of local government in the United States, according to the resolution commissioners signed.

There are 254 counties in Texas that provide services to their citizens.

Also at Monday's meeting, precinct one justice of the peace Theresa Farris requested an increase in the chief deputy clerk's pay, making it equal to the pay received by the same position in other precincts, effective with the next county budget. Judge Grant told Mrs. Farris that the court will consider that request when budget time comes.

Regarding a discussion at last commissioners court, county auditor Brittania Blanks told commissioners that paying mileage to senior services volunteers would have to be reported by form 1099 for amounts over $100. County officials have been considering reimbursing volunteers for delivering Meals on Wheels.
