Lady Eagles claim 2 softball wins
LADY EAGLE ASHLEY KETHLEY beats a throw to home in a District 20-AAA victory over the Palestine Lady Wildcats.
The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles softball team got two more wins last week in District 20- AAA games against Palestine and Brownsboro.
Fairfield beat Palestine at home 10-2 and lost to Brownsboro on the road 3- 2.
In addition the Fairfield junior varsity squad beat Brownsboro 16-7.
Against the Palestine Lady Wildcats early last week, the Lady Eagles opened with four first inning runs to take a quick 4-0 lead.
A pair of walks and a pair of errors helped Fairfield to the early lead.
Catcher Becca Lyles drew a walk, then courtesy runner Ashley Kethley stole second base and came home when a fly ball to right field by first baseman Riley Jo Davidson was bobbled.
With two outs, Felicia Lopez-Simmons drew a walk and advanced to second on a passed ball. Miss Davidson scored on an error that put Katie Berger on base, and Lyndsey Ransom singled to score Misses Lopez-Simmons and Berger.
Out fielder Mia Mayo opened the bottom of the fourth with a single and went to second on a passed ball. Miss Lyles followed that up with a single and Jessica Gallegos rapped a 2-RBI double to extend the lead to 6-0.
Palestine scored runs in the fifth and sixth innings and Fairfield closed out its scoring with four runs in the bottom of the sixth.
Scoring were Misses Davidson, Lopez- Simmons, Berger, Kassi Floyd and Kayse Kirgan. Miss Davidson opened the inning with a triple, Miss Kirgan singled, Miss Mayo doubled, Miss Lopez- Simmons reached on what was to be a sacrifice and Misses Berger and Floyd walked.
On the mound, Miss Kirgan struck out nine batters, issued one walk and five hits, and gave up two runs.
In spite of the lopsided score, the Lady Eagles committed six errors in the game.
At Brownsboro, the Lady Bears tallied one run in the top of the first and the Lady Eagles answered with a run.
Miss Kirgan led off by reaching first on an error, stole second, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Miss Mayo and scored on a play at first.
In the second inning, Miss Gallegos led off with a single, advanced to second on a play to first and scored on a single by Miss Ranson. Miss Berger, who drew a walk, and Miss Ranson scored on a single to right center by Miss Kirgan, giving the team a 4-1 lead.
The Lady Bears crossed the plate three times in the third inning to tie the score until the Lady Eagles secured the win in the top of the seventh.
Miss Kirgan led off with a single, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Miss Mayo and scored on a single to right by Miss Davidson.
Winning pitcher Miss Kirgan gave up eight hits, struck out six and issued a walk. Brownsboro’s hits included a pair of doubles and a home run in the third inning when they scored three runs.
The Lady Eagles jv team scored seven runs in the first inning against the Lady Bears, five in the second and four in the third en route to a win.
Scoring three times each were Misses Kethley, Berger and Amanda Drake, scoring twice each were Miss Floyd and Sarah Sloat, and scoring once each were Miss Lopez- Simmons, Jillian Peterson and Natalie Neill.
The jv took advantage of nine walks and seven errors, while getting a double from Miss Drake and singles from Misses Kethley, Sloat and Neill.
Fairfield varsity players have compiled a 4-0 district record.
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play at Athens early this week, head to Palestine Westwood on Thursday and host Crockett on Tuesday.
