Al and Jo Samons up and kicking, still in the Dallas area. Al says he misses our County much. I told him that the fish in Red Lake still trembled at the sound of his name! I really miss that pair. Years ago, Al told me a very humorous story about himself and his father…..Al was a terrific barber, highly skilled, but he was always quick to point out that his mechanical skills were low. Now, Al’s Dad on the other hand, was a former cotton plantation manager, later ran a large farm implement dealership, and was a highly skilled mechanic. Al said that one day he was attempting to turn a nut off a bolt while working on his car when suddenly his Dad, who had been watching Al’s progress from the rear, just suddenly reached over his shoulder, took the combination wrench from his hand and said, “Give me that wrench, Son, you’re embarrassing it!”

Another complaint came in this week over elderly person “wasting” the money in their checking account or savings. These complaints normally come from friends and Loved Ones who are genuinely and correctly concerned for the elderly person’s financial wel- fare. Sometimes these complaints come from those who will inherit the nest egg, and though they never say it, don’t want to see what will be “their’ money, quibbled away before the individual passes away. At any rate, please understand that the Sheriff’s Office has no means to legally stop the proper owner from spending all or part of their own nest egg, no matter how frivolous may seem the reason. If they own the account and the money within, then it is theirs to do with as they please.
Lady 911’S from Anderson County on US-79, says her gas pedal just broke and she can’t get her vehicle to slow down. Nope, it is not a Toyota….a Ford F-150 pickup…..Never mind, getting it slowed now, on the shoulder. Again, for any of our readers who have this calamity….Bump your gear shift up one notch from DRIVE to NEUTRAL, then coast to the shoulder and turn off the key when stopped. Years ago, as a Highway Patrolman, we had big muscle cars that had a habit of doing the same thing. The brakes could not hold back that big motor if it was wound up….but putting it in neutral, pardon the play on words, even with the motor turning 3,000 RPMS, neutralized the situation. Every driver, not just Toyota owners should know and remember this little method.
Until Next Week . . . RALPH BILLINGS
