Grand jury hears criminal charges
A Florida man arrested in connection with a robbery at a Wortham convenience store in March was indicted by the Freestone county grand jury last week on felony charges of aggravated robbery and credit/debit card abuse.
The robbery occurred March 9 at Convenient Corner and Keith Lance Williams, 31, was arrested 55 minutes later in Mexia.
Wortham Police Chief Scott Peters reports that the Florida man had been in the store several times and allegedly made a purchase with a stolen credit card.
He robbed the store using a toy gun, which was recovered when he was arrested, the Wortham chief says.
Other charges on which indictments were returned include assault, possession of methamphetamine, driving while intoxicated, failure to comply with registration, criminal conspiracy to commit arson, insurance fraud,unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; driving while intoxicated with a child passenger, credit card abuse and burglary of a habitation.
Indicted by the grand jury are:
—Gene McMurtrey, 45, of Teague on a Jan. 6 complaint of assault, allegedly choking Stacy Lynn Benavides, a family member.
—Robert Bruce Darden, 32, of Teague on a charge of possession of methamphetamine on Jan. 21.
—Billy Joe Hardin, 68, of White Oak on a Feb. 5 charge of driving while intoxicated. The indictment lists five prior DWI convictions.
—Michael Curtis Wilson, 33, of Mexia on a complaint of possession of methamphetamine on Nov. 30, 2009.
—Carl Alexander Turner, 25, on a Feb. 9 charge of failure to comply with registration requirements, allegedly failing to notify Teague Police Department before moving residences.
—Gary Daniel Moore, 41, of Fairfield on a complaint of criminal conspiracy to commit arson, reportedly planning with another individual to set fire to his 2006 GMC pickup truck.
—Gary Daniel Moore, 41, of Fairfield on a complaint of insurance fraud, allegedly reporting on March 1 to GMAC Insurance that his pickup truck was stolen.
—Ernaud Prophete, 39, of Florida, on a Feb. 13 charge of unauthorized use of a motor vehicle, a pickup truck owned by Billy Ray Vestal.
—Javier Iran Arey, 35, of Houston on a complaint of DWI with a child passenger on Feb. 14.
—Bobby Clinton Pickens, 29, of Fairfield on a charge of credit card abuse, allegedly using a credit card without permission of the cardholder on March 3.
—Michael Garver, 34, of Centerville on a Dec. 27, 2009, charge of DWI. The indictment shows two prior DWI convictions.
