The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles softball team opened the District 20- AAA season last week with wins over Palestine Westwood and Crockett.

The Lady Eagles played at home against the Westwood Lady Panthers and on the road against the Crockett Lady Bulldogs.

In the district debut, the FHS squad had to overcome a 3-run deficit to post a 6-3 victory.

Fairfield gave up three runs in the first three innings before the bats came alive for four hits and five runs in the bottom of the third.

Leadoff batter Kayse Kirgan opened the scoring run with a single and advanced to second on a sacrifice by Mia Mayo, followed by Becca Lyles who reached base on a Westwood error.

A triple by Riley Jo Davidson scored Misses Kirgan and Lyles, Miss Davidson scored on a double by Jessica Gallegos, who came home on a single by Felicia Lopez-Simmons. Final run of the inning was on a single by Lyndsey Ranson that plated Miss Lopez-Simmons.

In the fourth, Miss Davidson drove in Miss Mayo, who reached first when Miss Kirgan was put out at second on a fielder’s choice.

After getting the offense going in the third inning, the Lady Eagles allowed just one hit and retired the Lady Panthers in order in the fifth and sixth innings.

Fairfield pitcher Miss Kirgan struck out four batters and gave up six hits.

The Lady Eagles committed two errors, one of which allowed a pair of runs in the first inning.

Against the Lady Bulldogs, the FHS nine tallied three runs in the first inning en route to a 3-0 victory.

Scoring started when leadoff batter Miss Kirgan reached first on an error, then stole second and third, and Miss Mayo drew a walk before stealing second.

Miss Lyles singled to score the baserunners and came home on a double by Miss Gallegos.

From that point, the Lady Eagles got three more hits, a single by Miss Kirgan and a pair of singles by Miss Lyles, but could not add to the tally.

Miss Kirgan struck out four batters, gave up five hits and hit a batter with a pitch.

Fairfield was scheduled to play Palestine early this week, host Brownsboro on Friday and play Tuesday at Athens.
