Sales tax falls short, again
Sales tax revenue for the City of Fairfield for March trails that of a year ago, the seventh consecutive month of a decline.
The city is reimbursed $113,654 this month, down 26.06 percent from the $153,715 received in March 2009.
For the first quarter of 2010, sales tax revenue has declined 28.69 percent, from $612,488 to $436,763.
Over the past year, Fairfield sales tax income has been lower in 10 of 12 months.
The March check from the Texas Comptroller reflects taxes collected on retail sales in January and reported in February.
Teague is reimbursed $34,406 this month, down 30.81 percent from the $49,727 received last March. For the year, income has declined 18.67 percent, from $153,959 to $125,208.
Wortham receives a March check for $5,819, a drop of 10.9 percent from the $6,532 reimbursed a year ago. Sales tax revenue is up in Wortham during the first quarter of 2010, though, from $25,103 to $33,298.
Streetman shows a 97.53 percent rise in its sales tax reimbursement, receiving $3,178 this month compared to $1,608 last March. For the year, payments are up 53.51 percent, from $5,755 to $8,836.
Reimbursement checks to communities in Anderson county total $418,884 this month, down 10.21 percent from the $466,538 received last March. Payments this year are down 14.18 percent, from $1.66 million to $1.43 million.
Communities in Leon county receive $90,052, down 20.86 percent from the March 2009 reimbursement total of $113,796. For the year, payments are down 20.87 percent, from $410,014 to $324,412.
In Limestone county, the March reimbursment total is down 6.64 percent, from $241,359 a year ago to $225,318 this month. Payments for the first quarter are down 11.44 percent, from $898,764 to $795,877.
Checks to communities in Navarro county total $387,266 this month, down 5.39 percent from the $409,365 received last March. For the year, payments are down 4.16 percent, from $1.39 million to $1.32 million.
Sales tax reimbursement checks were mailed from the comptroller’s office to 1,138 cities throughout the state this month and show a 7.9 percent drop from last March. Total this month is $271 million, compared to $291 million a year ago.
Largest payment, $35 million goes to Houston and shows an 11.54 percent drop from last March.
Dallas is reimbursed $15.2 million this month, down just .79 percent from a year ago.
