History Club returning to restroom site

In recognition of its 85th year, Fairfield History Club returns to its roots Friday and will meet briefly in the women’s restroom in the basement of the Freestone county courthouse.

History club members plan to meet at the courthouse at 11 a.m., bringing lawn chairs and refreshments.

County Judge Linda Grant will sign a proclamation noting the 85th anniversary of the club.

Fairfield History Club was organized March 19, 1925, by 17 women and met in the courthouse basement restroom, which was considerably larger than it is today.

Club members set up folding screens for privacy and continued meeting in the restroom weekly until the 1932-33 club year when meetings were moved to the homes of members.

The club has met at the historic Moody-Bradley House since buying it in 1967.

Over the years, Fairfield History Club has taken a leading role in various educational, civic and charitable projects.

Annually, it awards to Letha Parker Memorial Scholarship to a Fairfield high school senior student and holds the Queen of the Trinity Star luncheon, served by members in 1860s era dress, on the clubhouse grounds.
