Eagles, Lady Eagles host track meet
FHS girls win team crown . . .

In their first track meet of the season, the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles claimed a team victory and the Eagles placed second.
The meet was their own, the Fairfield Invitational, run Thursday at Eagle Field and featuring eight area high schools.
To notch the team win, the Lady Eagles tallied 198 points, out pacing second place Palestine, 141 points.
Other girls’ varsity division finishes were: 3, Corsicana, 108; 4, Mexia, 53; 5, Palestine Westwood, 48; 6, Athens, 16; 7, Groesbeck; and 8, Crockett, 0.
The boys’ division was won by Crockett with 139 points and the Eagles scored 108 for second place.
Rounding out the boys’ division was: 3, Corsicana, 105; 4, Athens, 97; 4, Mexia, 97; 6, Palestine, 43; 7, Groesbeck, 4; and 8, Westwood, 0.
Eagles junior varsity thinclads scored 140 points to finish second behind Corsicana, 193, and the Lady Eagles jv squad was fifth in its division.
FAIRFIELD EAGLES SENIOR John Horton cleared the bar at 12 feet, six inches to win the pole vault at the Fairfield Invitational track meet.
FHS distance runner Lilly Duarte picked up two wins for the Lady Eagles varsity, in the 1,600 meter race with a time of 6:00.31 and in the 3,200-meter race with a time of 12:13.
Defending state 200- meter champion Derekia Coleman ran her race in 26.31 seconds to win.
Picking up a win in the 800-meter ran was Shelby Wickens, who posted a time of 2:39.
Rounding out the first place finishes in running events for the Lady Eagles was the 1,600-meter relay team of Katie Berger, Lilly Duarte, Kathleen Chappell and Shelby Wickens, with a time of 4:26.
Field events saw Markesha Cox win the shot put with an effort of 32 feet, nine inches, and Kalyn Caffey win the discus with a throw of 93-2.
Eagles distance runner Lando Duarte, twin brother of Lilly, also won the two long distance races. He posted a time of 5:02.77 over 1,600 meters and 10:49 over 3,200 meters.
Picking up a pair of gold medals in field events was Eli Pratt, winning the discus in 132-9 and the shot put in 49-6.
Pole valuter John Horton cleared 12-6 for first place in the varsity meet.
Boys’ junior varsity competition produced a triple gold performance from Aaron Heers, winning the 800-meter run in 2:21, the 1,600-meter run in 5:38 and the pole valut with an effort of 9-0.
Fairfield jv distance runner Justin Campbell ran 3,200 meters in 11:58 for the win.
Claiming gold in the 800-meter relay race was the Eagles jv team of Caleb Gunnels, Caleb Shannon, Will Akers and Ben Barlow, posting a time of 1:39.
