Governor
Dr. W.P. Harrison, well known physician of Teague, has been appointed a member of the State Board of Health by Gov. Allred.
Dr. Harrison’s appointment will please many as he is a leader in Teague and has many friends in this county.
Oil Field for Freestone
County
Amerada Berk No. 1 Expected to Make Good Producer—-Extension Cayuga Field.
The Amerada Berk No. 1 well, 16 miles northeast of Fairfield, is making gas with a showing of oil. Storage tanks have been prepared, and it is believed when it cleans itself, it will be a good producer.
This well is about 300 feet from a producer in the Trinity River channel, and proves that the Cayuga field extends into Freestone county.
A “Governor Hogg”
Pecan Tree Received
and Planted Here
Several months ago, Superintendent W.F. Richardson made application for one of the “Gov. Hogg pecan trees”. This week the tree was received from A&M College. Lee Kirgan was invited to plant the tree, and with Mr. Richardson’s assistance, it was planted on the southeast corner of the courthouse lawn, and was dedicated to the memory of the lamented Gov. James S. Hogg.

Given Local Teams
The Fairfield girls and boys basketball teams received the District 20A championship trophies at a special assembly last week.
Captains for the girls for the season were senior Judy Robinson and junior Billie Young. Leland Willis was coach.
Captains for the Eagles were senior Maurice Burleson and junior Johnny Cole. Dean Madison was coach with Don Emmons as assistant.
Science Class Given
Mechanical Heart for
Study
P.L. Thomas, head of the Freestone County Heart Fund, presented a mechanical heart to the science department of Fairfield high school Friday. W.C. Oakes, principal, received the heart in a special assembly program.

Announce Butler School
Election
Five candidates have filed application for election to two places on the Butler Independent School District board, according to Frank J. Robinson, superintendent.
The candidates are Charlie Tippens, Shiloh; Belve Carter, Owen Chapel; Dan Bryant, Owen Chapel; Q.L. Solomon, Lone Star, for re-election, and Andrew Alford, Bethel, for re-election.

Barton Sets Town
Meeting
Congressman Joe Barton will hold his first town meeting in Freestone county this Friday.
The town meeting will allow the congressman to meet residents of the area, brief them on his activities in Congress and assist them with any problems they may be having with federal agencies.
Cub Scouts of the Month
Cub Scout Pack 668 held its annual Blue and Gold Banquet Feb. 28 at Reunion Center. Theme for this year was “Diamond Jubilee”, which marks the 75th anniversary of Boy Scouts Worldwide, and the 55th year of Cub Scouts.
Cub Scouts of the month were David Bonner, Tab Lawhorn, and Greg Smith. Ronnie Brewer was Webelo Cub Scout of the Month.
VFW Presents Flag to
Museum
Members of the local Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5872 have presented Freestone County Museum with a 22-foot flag pole and two flags, the American and the Texas flags.
According to Mrs. Clifton E. Childs, Jr., curator of the museum, the flags will be flown on the days the museum is open and on special holidays.
The VFW is now 13 years old, with a total membership of 393, and an auxiliary with 250 members. 2000
City of Fairfield is
Seeking Volunteers
The City of Fairfield is looking for some help in the form of volunteers to serve on committees, or provide clerical duties that would allow the city to update and start new community programs.
“We don’t have as much community input as we would like,” city administrator Mike Gokey says.
County Okays Trash
Police
The Freestone county commissioners court reluctantly approved a policy to police public nuisances—- junk vehicles, dilapidated houses and rubbish—-but have not settled how messes will be cleaned up.
It took a tie-breaking vote by County Judge Linda Grant recently for the court to decide to enforce a state law that went into effect in September 1999.
Meeting on Kirvin City
Park Set
A meeting will be held Thursday night in Kirvin to discuss plans for a new Kirvin city park.
The park will be built on land donated by Harold Deshayes.
Preliminary work has begun for the park, but supporters note that total community involvement will be necessary to make the park a success.
