Lifters preparing for state

Fairfield high school boys powerlifters hosted a small competition last week and took second place as a team.

The meet was Thursday.

Picking up gold medals were Brock Eggleston in the 242-pound class and Eden Richardson in the super heavyweight division. Eggleston hoisted a total of 1,400 points in three lifts and Richardson totaled 1,240 pounds.

Placing second were Ryan Wilkinson with a 1,260 total in the 220 class and Cody Sell with a 1,240 total in the 198 class.

Four Fairfield lifters, Tulio Cordon, A.J. Gabriel, Michael Mooneyham and Adam Jones, finished third in their weight classes.

Cordon totaled 905 pounds in the 132 class, Gabriel lifted 925 in the 198 class, Mooneyham lifted 1,250 in the 220 class and Jones totaled 1,285 in the 275 class.

Finishing fourth in the 275-pound class was Bubba Jackson, with lifts totaling 1,270 pounds.

As many as 11 members of the team may advance to state, set for March 13 in Rusk.

Qualified, or on the bubble, for state are: Garrett Thompson, 123 class; Cordon, 132 class; Lamar O’Brien, 181 class; Mooneyham and Wilkinson, 220 class; Cory Black and Eggleston, 242 class; Jackson and Jones, 275 class; and Eli Pratt and Richardson, super heavyweight.

On the girls’ team, Kalyn Caffey competed Saturday at region and posted her highest weight total of the year, 830 pounds. However, she missed qualifying for state by 20 pounds.

Powerlifting consists of bench press, dead lift and squat.
