Races develop for May
Politics in Fairfield got a little more interesting over the past week as a contest developed for mayor.
Signing up to challenge incumbent Mayor Roy Hill is James Gunter.
A contest for place three on the Fairfield city council, the remaining year of an unexpired term, materialized when Scott Schick filed to challenge Donna Tyus, who was already signed up.
Running unopposed, so far, for the Fairfield council are incumbents Joe Lee Kirgan, Jr., in place one and Luke Ward, Jr., in place two.
Voters in Freestone county must fill 22 ballot spots in city and school district elections set for May 8.
Deadline to file for the elections is Monday.
Fairfield Independent School District voters must fill three at-large seats on the board of trustees, and four candidates are seeking those positions.
Signed up for the FISD election are incumbents Teresa Vandiver and LaCharles Bass, Marcus Turner and Charlene Ward.
The City of Teague has five posts up for election this spring, mayor and two full council places, plus two unexpired council places.
Filed for mayor is Earnest Pack, who is a former mayor, place one incumbent James Monks for a full term and Chris Nickleberry, for an unexpired term in place four.
Candidates are still needed for a full term in place three and the unexpired portion of a term in place five.
Teague ISD has fielded a candidate for each of two places on the board of trustees, Brian Bowers in place two and incumbent Jeff Gonzales in place four.
Seeking one of three atlarge seats on the Wortham city council is Judy Edwards, who formerly served as mayor.
Filed for election in the City of Streetman are incumbent Mayor Johnny Robinson and incumbent city commissioner Sherill Minze. A second commissioner spot also must be filled.
