Lady Eagles earn All-District honors

KIRESTEN COX . . . Defensive MVP KIRESTEN COX . . . Defensive MVP A 9-1 record in District 20-AAA earned All-District honors for nine members of the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles basketball team.

Out of that number, three FHS cagers each are on the first, second and honorable mention teams.

All-District selections, made by coaches, were announced after the Lady Eagles bowed out of post season play with a loss in the Region III tournament Friday night.

The Lady Eagles’ season concluded with a loss to Madisonville in the first round of the region tournament. Fairfield won area and region quarterfinal games to advance to the tourney.

Representing 20-AAA as the second place team, Brownsboro exited the playoffs at the area round, and third place Athens was defeated in bi-district.

Named offensive most valuable player in the district is Fairfield junior post Courtney Morton, senior post Kiresten Cox is defensive MVP, senior guard Joye McElroy and junior guard Barvion Wyatt make the first team and senior point guards Mia Mayo and Sarah Linton are on second team All-District.

COURTNEY MORTON . . . Offensive MVP COURTNEY MORTON . . . Offensive MVP Getting honorable mention nods are freshman Jasmine Griffin, sophomores Kathleen Chappell and Jermaca Brown, and junior Olivia Gallegos.

During the 10-game district season, Miss Morton scored 10.7 points per game and grabbed 12.4 rebounds. She led the team by shooting 67 percent from the free throw line and was 44 percent from the field.

Last year Miss Morton was district defensive MVP, and was newcomer of the year as a freshman.

Miss Cox led scoring with a 14.8 points per game average and pulled down 11.3 rebounds per game.

She was a first team All-District pick a year ago. Second team pick Miss Wyatt scored 13.6 points per game in district, shooting 37 percent from the field and 66 percent from the charity stripe. She was a second team selection last year.

JOYE McELROY . . . All-District First Team JOYE McELROY . . . All-District First Team Miss McElroy averaged 10.7 points per game, shooting 30 percent from the field and 60 percent from the free throw line, and provided 2.9 assists per game.

Misses Wyatt and McElroy made second team All-District in 2009.

District MVP is Alex Furr, a senior from Athens, top sophomore is LaQuesha Cooper of Brownsboro and top freshman is Treka Franklin of Athens.

Eight Lady Eagles earned Academic All- District Honors. They are Misses Brown, Linton, Mayo, Chappell, McElroy, Wyatt, Gallegos and Morton.
