FJHS Eagles conclude cage season
A FOOTBALL HELMET autographed by the 2009 Dallas Cowboys was awarded Doug Ross by Wortham high school senior student Miki Short as part of a Project Graduation fundraiser.
The district games were played on the road.
Eagles eighth grade A cagers finished the season with a 14-1 record and were perfect in nine district games.
The team opened with 11 points against the Wildcats and added 13 the second period to lead 24-7 at halftime.
Fairfield scored 13 points in each of the second half period and gave up 17 to claim a 50-24 win in the finale.
“This was a good finish to the season. Our scoring was even and consistent through the game and everyone on the team contributed points,” coach Lynn Caffey says.
WORTHAM HIGH SCHOOL senior Bradley Paradoski and Sammie Lee Davis show off an autographed Dallas Cowboys helmet given away in an Operation Graduation fundraiser. Mrs. Davis is the mother of Cowboys offensive lineman Leonard Davis, a Wortham high school graduate.
“Defensively, we held them very well and we controlled the rebounds,” the coach adds.
Reaching double digits were Bryson Gates, 13 points, and Larry Rose, 11 points.
Also scoring were: Byron Mireles, 7; Cade Warren, 6; Wyatt Curry, 4; Luke Rachel, 4; Jacob Gallegos, 2; Chris Lide, 2; and Coy Pierce, 1.
Top rebounders were Rachel and Gates.
“I’m really proud of these guys and the season they had,” Caffey says.
Fairfield seventh grade A cagers started well against the Wildcats, leading 13-9 the first period and 26-20 at the half, but ran into some trouble in the second half.
The Eagles maintained their 6-point spread through the third period, 36-30, and held on through the final stanza to squeak out a 39-38 win.
“This was a battle all night for us. These guys never did give up, and we finally won a close game,” coach Clint Elliott reports.
In double digits with 10 points was Dedrick Garner.
Also scoring were: Keishaun Cunningham, 7; Cam Adams, 7; Demarcus Taylor, 4; Michael Gibson, 3; Devin Eggins, 2; Rahiem Hayes, 2; Chance Carroll, 2; and Justin Morgan, 2.
The seventh grade A team compiled a record of 7-2 in district and 10-5 overall.
“This season was fun and exciting. These guys always are striving to get better and become better men and athletes,” Elliott says.
FJHS eighth grade B Eagles took an 8-5 lead over Palestine the first period and turned that into a 15-8 advantage by intermission.
The Eagles won the third period 11-10 and blanked the Wildcats 7-0 in the final stanza for a 33-18 victory.
“The guys played well on both ends of the court,” coach Michael Posey says. “It was a great season and I’m sure they will continue with their winning ways.”
In double digits with 15 points was Alex Ward.
Also scoring were: Chris Munoz, 6; Donald O’Brien, 5; Calvin Gilliland, 2; Bud Jones, 2; Cade Carroll, 2; and Michael Smaghee, 1.
The team posted a 7-2 district record to share the championship crown.
Fairfield seventh grade B cagers fell to the Wildcats 6-29.
“We got off to a rough start and never could overcome,” Posey reports. “The effort and intensity was there but we just fell short on the execution part.”
Scoring were: Brandon Lucero; 2; Jacob McQueen, 2; and Garrett Teer, 2.
