FHS boys win powerlifting
The boys’ team claimed first place and the girls’ were third when Fairfield high school powerlifters competed last week at Palestine Westwood.
The meet, held Thursday, included athletes from seven area high schools.
En route to winning the meet, FHS boys took first place in three weight divisions.
Junior student Garrett Henson lifted a total of 1,135 pounds, a combination of bench press, dead lift and squat, to win the 198-pound class.
Lifting the most of any competitor from Fairfield, 1,500 pounds, was junior Cory Black who took gold in the 242-pound class.
First place in super heavyweights went to Eden Richardson with a total of 1,265 pounds.
Placing second were Jacob Cain, 1,005 pounds in the 165 class; Lamar O’Brien, 1,295 pounds in the 181 class; Cody Sell, 1,070 pounds in the 198 class; and Brock Eggleston, 1,350 pounds in the 275 class.
Finishing third in the 132-pound class with a total of 875 was Tulio Cordon, third in the 198 class went to A.J. Gabriel with a total of 995, and Michael Mooneyham was third in the 220 class with a total of 1,250.
Fourth place finishes were captured by Ryan Wilkinson, 1,240 pounds in the 220 class, and Robert Jackson, 1,315 pounds in the 275 class.
Placing fifth were Josh O’Brien, 840 pounds in the 148 class, and Adam Jones, 1,230 pounds in the 275 class.
In girls’ competition, Shelby Wickens won the 148-pound class with lifts totaling 600 pounds.
Placing second were Carly Hasselbach, 460 pounds in the 114 class, and Kalyn Caffey, 795 pounds in the 220 class.
Finishing third in the 114 class was Ashley Whatley with lifts totaling 450 pounds, Emilee Moore lifted 400 pounds for third in the 148 class and Katherine George was third in the 165 class with a total of 525 pounds.
Taking fifth place in the 165 class was Brianna Hughes, who recorded a total of 345 pounds.
In junior varsity action, the Eagles struggled early, falling behind 4-17 the first period and trailing 22-32 at intermission.
Fairfield outscored Brownsboro 27-19 the second half, but it was not enough as they fell 41-51.
Scoring for the jv were: Garrett Thompson, 8; Tad Cannon, 5; Blake Davis, 5; Shakeal Carter, 5; Jared DeFrance, 5; Darius Roberts, 4; Betts, 3; Cooper Vandiver, 3; Brady Johnson, 2; and A.J. Gabriel, 1.
The Eagles freshmen quintet had the easiest time against Brownsboro, starting with a 9-5 first period lead and working that into a 22-13 advantage at the half.
Fairfield scored 15 points in each of the second half periods, and gave up 30 points, to win 52-44.
Three players reached double digits—-Will Akers led with 19 points, Cooper Cole tallied 17 and Aaron Heers had 10.
Also scoring were: Josh Munoz, 4; and Hayden Hill, 2.
