Lena Mae Fryer
Funeral services were held Wednesday for Lena Mae Fryer, 89, who died Feb. 21 at her home in Fairfield. Services were held at Calvary Baptist Church in Fairfield with Bro. Terry Skinner officiating. Special music was provided by Shelby Race.
Born August 29, 1920, Mrs. Fryer was the daughter of James Sanford Ivy, Jr. and Grace Gunter Ivy. She eloped and married Francis Bryant Fryer June 1, 1940 in Mexia.
Mrs. Fryer worked as a bookkeeper at Ivy’s Dry Goods store in Fairfield for years. After she retired, the couple traveled and enjoyed life. She especially enjoyed researching her family history and wrote a book about her Gunter family.
Mrs. Fryer was a charter member of Jose Antonio Navarro Chapter of DRT in Corsicana, a charter member of Trinity Star Chapter NSDAR in Fairfield, and a member of the United Daughters of the Confederacy.
Mrs. Fryer was also a member of Calvary Baptist Church, where her grandfather Sanford Vinson Ivy was a charter member. Mrs. Fryer’s father Jim Ivy helped build the baptistry in the old Calvary Baptist Church building. Mrs. Fryer and her husband helped with numerous fish fries and Sunday school parties and loved their church home.
Mrs. Fryer was ill and confined to her home for at least 15 years.
Members of Calvary Baptist Church visited her faithfully, just as she would have done in her active years. They were a great blessing to her and her family.
Mrs. Fryer also helped with many social events in Fairfield. She generously loaned her Fostoria crystal serving dishes for many of these events. They were donated to Calvary Baptist Church in her memory.
