City, school votes . . .

With the filing deadline still a week and a half away, less than half the candidates needed for spring city and school elections have signed up for ballot places.

The cities of Fairfield, Teague, Wortham and Streetman are holding city council elections and Fairfield, Teague and Wortham school districts will conduct trustee elections.

In addition, voters in the cities of Fairfield, Teague and Streetman must pick mayors.

There are a total of 22 offices to be filled in May 8 balloting, and only 10 candidates filed.

Filing deadline is March 8.

The City of Fairfield has a full slate of candidates. Seeking election are Mayor Roy Hill, councilmen Joe Lee Kirgan, Jr., in place one and Luke Ward, Jr., in place two, and Donna Tyus for the remaining one year of the place four term.

Incumbent Teresa Vandiver is the only candidate signed up for one of three at-large seats on the Fairfield Independent School District board of trustees.

A pair of candidates, place four incumbent Jeff Gonzales and place two hopeful Brian Bowers have thrown their hats in the ring for the Teague ISD board, providing a candidate for the two election spots this spring.

Two incumbents, Mayor Johnny Robinson and commissioner Sherill Minze have signed for the City of Streetman election. A second spot on the city commission also must be filled.

Filed for one of the three at-large city council spots in the City of Wortham is former mayor Judy Edwards.

The City of Teague is in the greatest need of candidates, but has none. Voters in Teague must elect a mayor, alderman to full terms in places one and three, and aldermen to fill unexpired terms in places four and five.

Wortham ISD also has no candidates for places three and four on the school board.

City office terms are for two years and school trustees serve three years.

If a city or school has no contested races, an election does not have to be held—- those candidates are automatically declared the winners.
