FHS Lady Eagles looking to playoffs
With a couple more victories logged in the books, the varsity Fairfield high school Lady Eagles should finish the District 20-AAA basketball season no worse than tied with the Brownsboro Lady Bears for the title.
The Lady Eagles downed the Athens Lady Hornets and Palestine Westwood Lady Panthers last week to run the district mark to 8-1.
Fairfield and Brownsboro sport matching records, each with one loss to the other.
The question remaining is which team goes to the post-season playoffs as a first place squad and which goes in the runners-up position. It makes a difference, because the first place team gets a bye in the bi-district playoff round.
“We have to work out with Brownsboro on our places in the playoffs,” FHS head coach Stephen Heers says. “Both of us want to go in first place.”
Bi-district games must be played Feb. 15-16 and area contests are set for Feb. 18-20.
Early last week, the Lady Eagles tipped off against the Lady Hornets, taking a 19-5 lead the first period and adding 18 points in the second period to go into the half ahead 37-27.
Both teams tallied 25 second half points to give Fairfield a 62-52 win.
“For running the floor, this is probably the best game we played this year,” Heers reports. “We didn’t give them time to set up.”
Senior post Kiresten Cox and senior guard Joye McElroy scored 16 points each to lead the offensive effort, while junior guard Barvion Wyatt kicked in 14 and junior post Courtney Morton tallied 13.
Also scoring were: Mia Mayo, 2; and Kathleen Chappell, 1.
Miss McElroy connected on three 3-pointers against Athens and Miss Wyatt hit one from long range.
The Lady Eagles shot 61 percent from the free throw line, making 20 of 33 attempts.
“I would take 61 percent with some of the percentages we’ve had this year,” Heers says.
Athens ace Alex Furr made six from long range, scoring 27 points on the night.
Against the Lady Panthers, the FHS varsity quintet took an 18-15 lead the first period and added 21 second period points for a 39-26 edge at intermission.
The Lady Eagles scored 25 points the second half and gave up 31 in winning 64-57.
“We played with a lot of energy, but did not play as well as we should,” Heers reports.
“We out rebounded them extremely well,” he adds.
In double digits for Fairfield were Miss Morton, 20 points, and Miss Cox, 18 points.
Also scoring were: Wyatt, 8; McElroy, 5; Chappell, 5; Keanna Cox, 3; Mayo, 2; Jasmine Griffin, 2; and Olivia Gallegos, 1.
Free throw shooting fell to 42 percent, with the Lady Eagles making 11 of 26 attempts. Miss Morton was 4-for-5 from the charity stripe.
In junior varsity action, the Lady Eagles jumped on the Lady Hornets 21-2 the first period and added 12 second period points to lead comfortably 33-3 at the half.
Fairfield added 17 second half points and gave up just four—-they blanked Athens in the third period— to win 50-7.
Scoring for the jv were: Jayda Griffin, 8; Gabby Ransom, 7; Fruncheska Daniels, 7; Sadie Schaefer, 6; Denise Washington, 6; Krystal Rischer, 6; Christy Harper, 6; and Gabby Jackson, 4.
The Lady Eagles started slowly in the jv game against Westwood, taking a 4-2 first period lead, then pulled out the stops for 21 points the second period and a 24-7 lead at halftime.
Fairfield added 15 points the third period and 10 in the fourth, giving up one and 13, to notch a 49- 21 win.
Wielding the hot hand for 16 points was Miss Schaefer. She was joined in double digits by Miss Daniels, 10 points.
Also scoring were: Rischer, 6; Harper, 6; Ransom, 4; Jackson, 3; and Griffin, 2.
With no district opponents to play last week, Fairfield freshmen cagers squared off against West and Wortham.
Meeting West early in the week, the FHS frosh trailed 4-8 the first period and reduced the margin some to trail 8-12 at the half.
The Lady Eagles scored 16 points the second half and gave up 14 points to fall 24-26.
Leading the offense with 14 points, and with a pair of 3-pointers, was Hannah Dodds.
Also scoring were: Danielle Ransom, 3; Mykeshia Hudson, 3; Hayes, 3; and Katie Gardner, 1.
The frosh tallied six points in each of the first two periods against Wortham to lead 12-7 at the half in a low scoring affair.
The Lady Eagles added just six points the second half but claimed an 18-14 win.
Scoring for Fairfield were: Amy Lansford, 7; Ransom, 5; Gardner, 3; Hudson, 2; and Dodds, 1.
