Students earn honors at UIL contest

Fairfield elementary and junior high rate best . . .

FIFTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS FIFTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS Students at Fairfield elementary and junior high schools placed at University Interscholastic League academic competition at Crockett held Jan. 23. Fairfield elementary was named UIL champions, earning first place for the second year in a row, and Fairfield junior high school received second place overall.

The competition was for students in grades 2-8.

Other schools were Crockett, Athens, Brownsboro, Palestine and Palestine Westwood.

Events included art, writing, speaking, mathematics, music, science, social studies, spelling and 1-act play at the junior high level, and story telling, creative writing, music memory, ready writing, spelling, number sense, art smart, and oral reading at the elementary level.

Teams earning places were third grade memory team of Morgan Coleman, Melanie Pina, Edgar Pozda, Katie Judd, Aaryn Scires and Ashlyn Pavlas, who placed second, with Katie Judd also receiving fifth individual; fourth grade music memory team members Sutton Bonner, Madelyn Gallegos, Christine Ferguson, Kaitlin Newman, Zack Hammonds and Andrea Jauregui, third place; and fourth grade art smart team Kaytlyn Brewer, Sydnee Maricelli, Jennifer Salazar, Madison Akers, Emily Warren and Katelynn Mench, second place, with Madison Akers also earning sixth place individual.

SIXTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS SIXTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS Fifth grade art smart team placed first and included Carol Ann Veretto, Kara Doyle, who also received first place individual, Kyler Bonner, second place individual, Anna Claire Ham, and Chloe Wilson, both third place individuals.

In music memory, fifth grade team of Jared DeFriend, Azucena Ojeda and Cole Schick placed third, with DeFriend also earning third place individual

The sixth grade art smart team of Kassidy Butler, Lauren Moore, Kali Butler, Kelsie Adams and Jacie Hughes placed first, with Miss Butler winning high individual honors.

SEVENTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS SEVENTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS Sixth grade mathematics team members Rowan Prihoda, Jennifer Reed, Kaci Bachtel and Colbie Cherry combined talents for first placde, with Prohada as first place individual.

In music memory, the FJHS sixth grade team of Colbie Cherry, Karen Moore, Kendall Morales, Kaci Bachtel, Geonte Cotton and Dani German claimed first. Miss Cherry was high point individual.

The sixth number sense team of Cooper Gawryszewski, Jennifer Reed, Lauren Cole and Jocelynn Johnson claimed first place, with Gawryszewski as top individual.

Fairfield seventh grade maps, graphics and charts team members Bookie Johnson, Brandon Lucero and Connor Nix won, with Miss Johnson taking top individual honors.

Winning first place in calculator applications was the eighth grade team of Kayli Banks, Cheng Li, Samantha Walls and Jade Morales.

EIGHTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS EIGHTH GRADE UIL PARTICIPANTS FJHS students performed "The Steadfast Tin Soldier" in 1-act play competition and several cast members claimed individual honors.

Named to the all star crew were Caitlynn Stone and Lori Neill, and Brooke Bossier was named honorable mention to the all star cast. Mikey Taylor made all star crew.

A total of 114 FJHS students competed in the academic contest, and 22 students were in the 1-act play.
