New officers were elected at last month’s meeting of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Jonathan Hardin chapter, in Mexia.

The group met Jan. 13 at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia with the meeting called to order by Regent Diana McDonald, who welcomed those attending, including new member Lottie Catherine Etheridge.

Regent McDonald led members in the DAR ritual, pledges to the United States and Texas flags and read the President General’s letter. Billie Bournias gave the National Defense Report, Nancy Rula gave the registrar’s report of members at present numbered at 90, and treasurer Betty Hawkins gave her report.

Millicent McLeod read the minutes from the last meeting and they were approved with one correction by Rita Walker. The essay contest for the sixth grade was not on Christopher Columbus but on the Trans Continental Railway. She reported that the essays winners had been selected for Teague and it was reported that a winner in Fairfield had been selected. Mrs Walker also had her press book ready for mailing to TSDAR.

From an email to the secretary, Noma Nell Thomas listed the names of the winners of the Good Citizen essays in Limestone county and they include Luis Antonio “Tony” Perales of Coolidge high school, Cassie Natalia Anders of Groesbeck high school, and first place for Limestone county, Cori Johanna Speights of Mexia high school.

Members voted to adopt the recommendations of the by-laws committee by a voice vote, and elected the slate of officers nominated by the nomination committee as regent Kay Alston, vice regent Aleece McBay, second vice regent Nancy Rula, chaplain Noma Nell Thomas, recording secretary Millicent McLeod, corresponding secretary Geraldine Ariano, treasurer Betty Hawkins, registrar Billie Bournias, historian Rita Walker, librarian Diana McDonald, and honorary regent Diana McDonald.

Delegates elected to attend the state conference are Kay Alston and Eleanor Clark, with alternate delegates Delores Younts, Diana McDonald, Dana Cotton, Davina Bass, Nancy Rula, Betty Hawkins, Millicent McLeod and Aleece McBay.

Corresponding secretary Geraldine Ariano read a thank you note from Project Patriot for the donation for Pamela Marshall’s program and one from Mrs. Marshall. Billie Bournias gave a conservation moment and Millicent McLeod gave a magazine moment. A national award to be presented to Kay Alston for her outstanding achievement as State Organizing Secretary was reviewed by the group.

The business meeting was conducted by Regent McDonald.
