Blood drive Feb. 12 at city hospital

ETMC Fairfield will be host to a Carter BloodCare blood drive next Friday, Feb. 12 from noon to 4 p.m.

When a blood donor gives blood more than once a year, that person receives a mini-physical each time, creating a record of the trends in blood pressure, pulse, levels of iron and total cholesterol, says Carter BloodCare representative Janet Gregg.

“Each piece of information provides an opportunity to monitor one’s health,” she adds.

Some 37 percent of the population is eligible to give blood and less than 10 percent actually make the effort. Carter BloodCare needs to see 1,100 donors a day to maintain quality and sufficiency in the blood supply.

Potential blood donors can volunteer beginning at age 16 with a parent’s consent, or 17 years old independently. A donor must weight at least 110 pounds, be in good health and present a photo ID. Donors are urged to eat a nourishing meal and drink plenty of water before donating.
