Fighter pilot to give talk
      The only air force ace from the Vietnam War, retired B/Gen. Steve Ritchie, will present a program in Palestine next week. The program is from 5:30-7:30 p.m. at Ben E. Keith, 2019 W. Oak Street. Ritchie is the last United States Air Force pilot to achieve ace status by shooting down five enemy planes.

Burglar hits Dew business with sledge
      Wielding a sledgehammer, a burglar gained entry to Dew Truck Stop last week to steal cash and cigarettes. Entry to the building was gained by knocking a hole in a brick wall at the back of the store, Sheriff Ralph Billings reports. The break-in occurred early Friday and was discovered by owner Bijavant Bhanot when he opened for business about 5:30 a.m.

Chamber welcomes business
The Sweet Shoppe . . .
      A sweet, new business was welcomed to membership in the Fairfield chamber of commerce last week. The Sweet Shoppe, owned by Angela Morgan, opened last year in the Kennedy’s Korner store on the east side of the courthouse square. Fresh cupcakes and “Krumballs” are offered daily, as well as a variety of other sweets, and all occasion gift bags.

      Complex relationship issues and preventing dating violence will be addressed at Fairfield high school next week in an awareness program sponsored by the GFWC Fairfield History Club. “Choosing Respect” will be moderated at FHS on Feb. 10 by former FISD superintendent Tony Price.

      New officers were elected at last month’s meeting of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution, Jonathan Hardin chapter, in Mexia. The group met Jan. 13 at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia with the meeting called to order by Regent Diana McDonald, who welcomed those attending, including new member Lottie Catherine Etheridge.

      Dew Homecoming 2010 starts this Thursday with a bonfire at 6 p.m. and the community is invited. Homecoming ceremony will be Friday at Dew junior high school gym at 3 p.m., and the dance, for sixth through eighth grade students only, will be Saturday from 6 to 9 p.m.

      Thomas and Donna Lewis, and Zachary Lewis, all of Fairfield, have announced the marriage of their son, and father, Private First Class Christopher Lewis to Kelsie Jo Turner. PFC Lewis is a 2002 graduate of Fairfield high school and is currently stationed in Wiesbaden, Germany where he is serving as a satellite imagery analyst.

Blood drive Feb. 12 at city hospital
      ETMC Fairfield will be host to a Carter BloodCare blood drive next Friday, Feb. 12 from noon to 4 p.m. When a blood donor gives blood more than once a year, that person receives a mini-physical each time, creating a record of the trends in blood pressure, pulse, levels of iron and total cholesterol, says Carter BloodCare representative Janet Gregg.

      A fundraiser for the “Texas Outlaws” cheerleading group from Texas Gym Sports in Fairfield will be held Saturday at Buffalo Cellular One. Frito Pie, cookies and desserts will be available and the cheerleaders will be on hand to entertain. Mom’s will have a bake sale and tickets to a giveaway will be sold.

      Freestone county extension agent Sara Mote will teach community residents how to make treats for Valentine’s Day next week. A “sweetheart cooking class” is set Tuesday at 6 p.m. in the Fairfield high school home economics room and includes a complimentary cookbook. Cost is $5 per person, or $10 per family.
