FJHS Lady Eagles split decisions
The Fairfield junior high school Lady Eagles basketball teams split games evenly last week against the Athens Lady Hornets.
The district games were played in Fairfield.
Lady Eagles seventh grade A cagers grabbed a 9-1 lead over Athens in the first period and added seven points in the second period for a 16-5 advantage at half-time.
The FJHS quintet exploded for 15 third period points and hit for six in the final stanza for a 37-13 win.
“The Lady Eagles looked great incorporating a new offensive set, along with a successful full court press,” coach Naffie Mooney reports.
“Their defense was aggressive and produced numerous turnovers, which allowed the Lady Eagles to score many points as a result of the subsequent fast breaks,” she adds.
Scoring in double digits, 19 points, was Caitlynn Stone.
Also scoring were: Sarie Hill, 7; Allie Edwards, 6; Susan Owens, 4; and Meagan Lott, 1.
Miss Owens led rebounding with three on offense and two on defense, and Hannah Spradlin got two offensive boards.
Fairfield eighth grade A cagers blanked the Lady Hornets 4-0 the first period and scored an impressive 21 second period points to lead 25-2 at intermission.
The Lady Eagles tallied eight points in the third period and four in the fourth, giving up two and three, for a 37-5 win.
“The girls played a very physical game and ran several different offenses to help create shooting opportunities last night,” coach Brandy Lynch says. “They pounded the boards hard.”
Coach Lynch reports that Bree Bossier made an offensive rebound/tip shot for two points, and that Tiara Tatum and Peyton Pierce each hit a 3-pointer.
In double digits were Miss Tatum, 12 points, and Miss Pierce, 11 points.
Also scoring were: Bossier, 8; Kendell Emmons, 4; and Kayli Banks, 2.
Top rebounders were Misses Emmons, Bossier and Tatum.
Fairfield eighth grade B cagers matched points with Athens the first period, 2- 2, and were blanked the second period to trail 2-8 at the half.
The Lady Eagles scored six second half points and gave up 10 to drop an 8-18 decision.
“Kudos to Brianne Faughn for her efforts last night,” coach Lia Frederick says.
“We’re needing to work on a few things and we’ll see how that plays out in our tournament Saturday,” she adds.
Scoring four points each were Megan Hodges and Carla Shamblin.
Top rebounders were Miss Faughn and Jessie DeVries.
In seventh grade B action, neither team scored the first period and the Lady Eagles hit for four in the second period to lead 4-0.
Athens, however, rallied for 10 points the second period and the Lady Eagles managed just four more points in the game to fall 8- 10.
“The girls played an amazing zone last night,” coach Frederick says. “I’m very proud of their performance.”
Scoring for Fairfield were: Justice Oates, 4; Jessica Hill, 2; and Sam Benford, 2.
The Lady Eagles are scheduled to host Palestine Westwood this Thursday.
