Lady Eagles notch pair of district wins

Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity cagers posted a pair of wins last week for a 3-0 mark early in the District 20-AAA campaign.
The Lady Eagles hosted the Brownsboro Lady Bears early in the week and played the Athens Lady Hornets on the road Friday.
The FHS junior varsity and freshmen teams also were victorious.
“We are tickled to be 3- 0,” head coach Stephen Heers says.
Going into the action against Brownsboro, the varsity Lady Eagles were facing the team ranked sixth ranked in Class AAA by the Texas Girls Coaches Association.
At the beginning, the Lady Bears looked to be as tough as their billing as the Fairfield quintet trailed 6- 11 the first period.
The Lady Eagles, however, adjusted and reversed scoring in the second period to tie the contest 17-all by the half-time buzzer.

Fairfield won the third quarter 14-13 to take a slim 31-30 lead, then hit for 20 fourth period points for a 51-44 win.
“We thought we were going to get away from them in the fourth quarter, but they hit a three and stayed in there,” Heers says.
Fairfield countered the Brownsboro fourth period trey with a pair of its own, from Sarah Linton and Joye McElroy.
Leading scorer for the Lady Eagles was Miss Linton, who scored all of her 12 points from 3-point range.
Also in double digits were Barvion Wyatt, 11 points, and Kiresten Cox, 10 points.
Rounding out scoring were: Courtney Morton, 9; McElroy, 6; and Mia Mayo, 3.
The Lady Eagles shot 51 percent from the free throw line, making 22 of 34 attempts and outscoring the Lady Bears 8-7 from the charity stripe in the final stanza.
Fouling out of the contest in the fourth period was Miss McElroy.
“We did a good job playing full court man the whole game,” Heers reports.
At Athens, the FHS quintet matched the Lady Hornets’ 14 first period points and put 17 on the board to lead 31-23 at intermission.
The Lady Eagles won each of the second half periods 17-16 to claim a 65- 55 win.
“We just played super defense,” Heers declares.
He points out that the Lady Eagles held Athens’ top scorer, Alex Furr, to 20 points on the night, something few teams have done. But, Treka Franklin got hot for 22 points.
In the fourth period, Miss McElroy hit back-toback treys to keep her team out in front, while the Lady Eagles thwarted 3-point shooting by Athens.
“We did a good job not letting them shoot threes in the fourth quarter,” the FHS coach points out.
Leading the Fairfield offensive effort with 19 points was Miss McElroy, who was joined in double digits by Misses Wyatt and Cox, 16 points each, and Miss Morton, 12 points.
Also scoring was Olivia Gallegos, two points.
Fairfield shot 60 percent from the free throw line, making 15 of 25 attempts. Miss Morton was perfect on four trips to the charity stripe.
Fouling out late in the game was Miss Wyatt.
In jv action between Fairfield and Brownsboro, the Lady Eagles claimed an 8-4 lead in a low scoring first period and matched the Lady Bears’ nine second period points to lead 17-15 at half-time.
The FHS quintet tallied 10 points in the third period and four in the fourth, giving up four and two, for a 31-19 win.
Leading the offense with 15 points was Krystal Rischer.
Also scoring were: Fruncheska Daniels, 6; Keanna Cox, 3; Gabby Ransom, 3; Sadie Schaefer, 2; and Gabby Jackson, 2.
The Lady Eagles shot 50 percent from the free throw line, making seven of 14 attempts.
Against Athens on Friday, the jv claimed a 7-4 first period lead and hit for 14 points in the second period to take a 21-7 advantage into intermission.
The jv blanked the Lady Hornets 12-0 in the third period and added 10 points in the final stanza to win 43-12.
Scoring for Fairfield were: Cox, 7; Ransom, 6; Denise Washington, 6; Christy Harper, 6; Daniels, 4; Rischer, 4; Kassi Floyd, 4; Scahefer, 2; Hannah Dodds, 2; and Jackson, 2.
The Lady Eagles took just three free throws in the contest, all by Miss Cox who made one.
It was a game of two halves as the Fairfield frosh quintet trailed 10-20 at the end of the first half, then rallied to beat the Lady Bears.
FHS frosh cagers turned the game around when they tallied 12 points in the third period to tie the score at 22-all, and added nine in the final stanza to win 31- 26.
Reaching double digits with 12 points was Mykeshia Hudson.
Also scoring were: Amy Lansford, 7; Katie Gardner, 6; Hanna Dodds, 4; and Danielle Ransom, 2.
The frosh shot 50 percent from the free throw line, making seven of 14 attempts.
Miss Gardner fouled out of the game.
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to play at Palestine Westwood early this week, host Crockett on Friday and play at Palestine on Tuesday.
