GOING UP FOR THE REBOUND, Eagles senior post player Tevin Green scored 15 points and had 15 rebounds in the district opener against the Athens Hornets. Fairfield high school Eagles varsity cagers opened the District 20- AAA season Friday night with a win over the Athens Hornets.

Earlier in the week the Eagles downed cross county rival Teague.

“It was a huge win on the road,” FHS head coach Joey Worley says. “We are really fortunate to go on the road and steal a win.”

Worley reports that Athens, Brownsboro and Crockett were picked early as the top three teams in District 20-AAA.

Senior guard Evan Simpson scored eight first period points with a pair of 3-pointers to help stake the Eagles to a 17-7 lead.

Fairfield tallied nine points in a slower second period to hold a 26-18 advantage at intermission.

In the third period, senior guard LaDarius Brackens scored nine of the team’s 15 points to extend the lead to dozen at 41-29.

The Eagles took the final stanza 14-13 to post a 55- 42 victory.

“The kids played really hard. We got a lot of loose balls and played with a lot of energy,” Worley reports.

Senior post player Tevin Green had a big night—-the coach says he was a “difference maker”—-with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

Leading scorer, with 16 points, was Brackens.

Also reaching double digits, 11 points, was Willie Tatum.

Rounding out scoring were: Simpson, 8; Dominique Owens, 3; and Anthony Price, 2.

Helping Green on the board were Owens, 10 rebounds, and Brackens, eight rebounds.

The Eagles shot just 41 percent from the free throw line, making seven of 17 attempts.

Hitting a pair of 3-pointers each were Simpson and Brackens.

Fairfield pretty much had its way at home earlier in the week against Teague, notching an 80-35 win.

Leading the offense with 20 points was Brackens, who hit five 3-pointers in the contest.

The Eagles opened with 19 points, allowing just six, and added 27 in the second period to command a healthy 46-13 half-time advantage.

FHS cagers tallied 17 points in each of the second half periods, giving up 10 and 12 for the decision.

“The kids shot the ball well. It was a good win going into district,” Worley says.

Green tallied 17 points in the game, while Price and Simpson counted 10 each.

Also scoring were: Josh Brown, 7; Mikael Busby, 6; Owens, 6; Desmond Roberts, 3; and Simpson, 1.

The Eagles shot 40 percent from the free throw line, making eight of 20 attempts.

Freshmen and junior varsity squads both competed well, but fell against the Hornets.

The jv lost 42-28 and the frosh lost by a point at 43-12.

Coach Jody Walker reports that the jv squad had a hard time hitting the basket in the second half and the frosh fell in the final seconds.

The Eagles were scheduled to play at Palestine Westwood early this week, host Crockett on Friday and head to Palestine on Tuesday.
