Robbers Loot Buffalo State Bank Wednesday

Elude Capture
Robbers looted the Citizens State Bank here today of between $5,000 and $6,000, sped out of town in a car bearing Louisiana license plates, abandoned it in a country lane five miles out of town, and continued their flight in another car, believed stolen about 1 a.m. in Tyler.
The bank president R.W. Burroughs estimated the loss, saying that a complete check had not been made.
The two who entered the bank with pistols and the other two who waited outside in a “getaway” car, were described as roughly dressed and young, probably under the age of 30.
New Variety Store
Opened Saturday
The opening of Fairfield’s new variety store Saturday was well attended.
The store is located in the McIlveen building and is conducted by Mrs. Noma Granberry, with Mrs. Rosa Robinson assistant. Sheriff Sessions’ Car
Wrecked in Dallas
Sheriff J.R. Sessions car was damaged Sunday in Dallas when struck by another car.
The Sessions car was occupied by Mr. and Mrs. J.R. Sessions and two small sons, and Mr. and Mrs. J.H. Harding, who were on their way to Denton to visit Miss Carolyn Sessions.
All escaped injury except for slight bruises.
Former County Clerk Dies Suddenly at Teague
Home
Charles B. Grayson, aged about 58, died suddenly in his bed at his home in Teague Wednesday night.
His death came as a severe shock to family and friends.
Although still crippled from the effects of a car accident last September, his condition was not such as to cause apprehension. Burial will be in the St. Elmo Cemetery.
Deceased was born and reared in Freestone county, and served four years as county clerk.
1960 Fairfield Recorder is Sold to Grandson of
Owner
Mrs. L.C. Kirgan announces this week the sale of The Fairfield Recorder to Joe Lee Kirgan, Jr., a grandson of she and the late L.C. Kirgan, who purchased the newspaper in 1901 and published it until his death in 1947.
The new owner of The Fairfield Recorder graduated from Fairfield high school in 1948 and was employed at the newspaper from 1945 through the fall of 1948 at which time he entered Baylor University.
Mrs. Kirgan is the former Bette Ann Nettle of Fairfield and the couple has three children, Joe Lee, III, 8, Kay Ellen, 3, and Charles Jeffery, four months. J.B. Scott Given Pay
Increase by Fairfield
Chamber
The Fairfield chamber of commerce rehired J.B. Scott as chief of police in Fairfield and gave him a $25 per month salary hike at its meeting Tuesday night.
Eight members of the board of directors were present for the meeting including L.J. Davis, president, Burton Newman, secretary, Marvin Harris, Cannon Awalt, Tas Watson, Jr., Suel Hill, F. Morris Sneed, Robert Mortimer and Dwayne Chappell.
Millicent Sneed Takes Part in Tech’s Fashion
Show
Millicent Sneed, junior home economics major of Fairfield, is making garments for Texas Tech’s second all-cotton fashion show in Lubbock Municipal Auditorium Jan. 26.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. F.M. Sneed of Fairfield, Miss Sneed is a member of a second college level clothing and textiles class.
The fashion show premier of Vogue pattern styles for 1960 will demonstrate the effectiveness of all-cotton fabrics in high fashion costumes.

Exchange Vows
Ms. Charlotte Authement, daughter of Mrs. Ralph Claridge, and Jimmy Hemby of Troup were married Saturday night at the Methodist Church. The Rev. Leon Peacock performed the ceremony.
Mrs. Maxine Tisdale served the bride as matron of honor. Paul Marberry was best man. The couple will make their home in Oakwood were the groom is employed.
1985 Sewer, Water Work is
Underway The City of Fairfield has sold $1,250,000 in revenue bonds through a bonding agency with resulting funds earmarked for improvements to the city water and sewer facilities.
A contract has been awarded and construction is now underway on a new sewer plant which will require the bulk of the funds that were raised.
Site of the new construction two miles south of the flashing light at the intersection of U.S. Highway 84 and Post Oak Road.
Citizens Meet, Discuss

A meeting was conducted in the chamber of commerce building Jan. 3 which ws attended by representatvies from 13 civic and sports clubs and from the municipality.
Purpose of the meeting was to discuss various proposals for suggested utilization of acreage at the W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds here in Fairfield.

It all started about 8 p.m. Monday and culminated about 10 p.m. The burglary was committed, the suspects caught and confessions obtained all within the span of a 2-hour period.
A witness was driving past Living Waters Christian Inspirations across from city hall on South Mount when they noticed two hands on top of the counter.
The witness immediately called the police and officer Doyle Terry was dispatched.
Retired After 39 Years
S.C. (Dude) Whitaker retired Dec. 31 after 39 years as parts salesman with Parker Auto Supply.
He was honored with a .22 pistol and a crosstitched bird dog picture from his employer Lyle Red, and his fellow workers, who will all miss him.

Council Denies
Annexations
Fairfield city council members stopped short of annexing more than 100 acres of land into city limits— the property is in three separate tracts—- until the areas are platted and utility and street improvements are addressed.
Several months ago city workers discovered that several water and sewer taps had illegally been made at property in east Fairfield. The illegal taps were discovered when a water main was being run and an unmarked water line was cut.
Agent Resigns for
Career Opportunity
At the end of the month, Freestone county extension agent Dale Hurst trades his cowboy hat for a suit and tie to embark on a new career as a stockbroker.
Hurst, 27, starts training next month to become an investment representative for Edward Jones and is opening an office in Madisonville.
Steer Validation Set for
County Fair Market steer validation for the 2000 Freestone County Fair junior livestock show is set for Saturday, Jan. 29.
Each steer validated will be dewormed and vaccinated. Providing medicine is Scott Holmes Feed and Fertilizer of Teague.
The county fair is set to run June 12-17 at the W.L. Moody Reunion Grounds in Fairfield. The junior livestock sale will be Saturday, June 17.
Fairfield Rotary Participates in Mexico
Project
Fairfield Rotary Club participated in a project completed recently that equipped a workshop and kitchen in Mexico for the mentally handicapped.
Fairfield and Caldwell Rotary clubs each donated $500 to the project and the Lomas Del Potosi club, located in Mexico, donated $1,000.
Those gifts were matched by a $2,000 grant from Rotary International.
Eighth Girls Win
Tournament at
Palestine
The Fairfield eighth grade A Lady Eagles basketball team demolished three opponents recently, en route to winning the Palestine Tournament.
Hitting double digits, 10 points, for the Lady Eagles was Chasity Taylor.
Also scoring were Dominique Brown, 6, Erin Neal, 6, Jessica Jarvis, 6, Shawna Leatherman, 6, Ashley Coleman, 4, Layota Morton, 4, and Lindsay Trammell, 4.
