Officers end brief standoff
Law enforcement officers from four departments experienced some nervous moments Saturday when they responded to a report of a man with a high-powered rifle near East Texas Medical Center.
The incident ended with the arrest of Lynn Edmond McAlpine, 52, of Fairfield on a charge of public intoxication.
Fairfield Police Department Sgt. David Utsey reports that a telephone call was made at 4:50 p.m. by a woman at a house on W. Main Street north of the hospital that she wanted a man removed from her house.
Police also were told in another call that the man had a high-powered rifle, Utsey says.
Officers from FPD, Freestone County Sheriff’s Office, Teague Police Department and the Department of Public Safety responded to the report.
Utsey reports that the man fled the house, jumped over a fence and hid in a storage shed at a residence next door.
When the man, identified as McAlpine, did not come out of the building, a round from a pepper ball gun was fired and struck McAlpine in the elbow, the FPD sergeant reports.
After the shot, officers were able to make an arrest.
McAlpine was taken to ETMC then jailed on a public intoxication charge. He is free of jail after paying a fine.
