Fairfield Water and

Sewer Systems

City secretary T.A. McIlveen today received a check for $95,211.11 from the Federal Reserve Bank to be used in constructing Fairfield’s water and sewer system.

All contracts have been let and details attended to and construction work will begin early in January.

First step will be boring a water well. The first test will be made on the city’s lot in front of Baggett Lumber Co. plant here.

Corn-Hog Checks

Expected Soon

The county agent’s office is in receipt of acceptance sheets for 240 checks on Corn-Hog contracts. These checks total $5071. Government checks usually arrive in about ten days after the acceptance sheets.

Joyous Christmas

Season for 1934

The Recorder is published this week merely on account of legal notices and to carry out the tradition of the paper—-not miss an issue.

All in all, it seems to have been one of the most delightful Christmas seasons in years, and joy and happiness has reigned supreme. Especially since the editor and Mrs. editor have a joyous Christmas with all their numerous progeny and grandchildren at home for the first time in quite awhile.

Lott pinned in Florida

Designated a Naval Aviator Nov. 18, Marine Second Lieutenant James David Lott, son of Mr. and Mrs. J.E. Lott of Fairfield, has his “wings of gold” pinned on him by his wife the former Miss Virglyn A. Belew of Denton at the Naval Air Station, Pensacola, Florida.

Before entering the Marine Corps in March 1957, he graduated from North Texas State College.

J.S. Orands Win First

Place Lions Contest

The decorations at the home of Mr. and Mrs. J.S. Orand on Young Street were selected for the first place award in the annual Lions Club contest Dec. 22.

First place was awarded $25. The home decorations of Mr. and Mrs. Rankin Gilpin were chosen for the second place award of $15.

T.H. McWatters Candidate for Freestone

County Sheriff

T.H. McWatters, farmer and rancher of Donie, this week announced his candidacy for sheriff of Freestone county. The only other candidate to date for this office is Henry Brown who seeks reelection.

Other candidates who have announced are Travis D. Cockerell for reelection as county tax assessor-collector, Jim Billie Bonner, for reelection as commissioner of precinct one, and his opponent, Albert Finch, E.H. (Haynie) Ezell, reelection as commissioner precinct three, and his opponent L.C. Long;

L.E. Bain, reelection as constable precinct one, and R.L. Cherry and A.O. (Curley) Robinson, candidates for constable of precinct four.

Mrs. Edd Calame Celebrates 84th Birthday

Dec. 24

Mrs. J.B. Daniel and Mary Nell were in Wortham Dec. 24 to attend the celebration of Mrs. Daniel’s mother, Mrs. Edd Calame’s 84th birthday.

Mrs. Calame is granddaughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. R.B. Longbotham, early pioneers of the Wortham area. Mrs. Calame has lived in Wortham all of her life. A number of her children and grandchildren were present for the observance of her birthday Thursday.

Local Chamber of Commerce Board Names

Cole

Fairfield chamber of commerce board met recently to elect officers for the 1985 year from among its members.

Monte Cole, local owner of Cousin’s Restaurant, was elected president for the coming year, and James Wise, local Contel officer, was elected vice president. These men, as well as the new board, will take office the first of January.

Wayne C. Donaldson will continue to serve as executive vice president and Carolyn Ivison will continue to serve as secretary.

Directors are Beverly Awalt, Doyle Seale, Joe Rushing, Patsy Inderman and Bob Boyd.

Father Matzinger

Position Here

Father Jim Matzinger, a native of Houston, will be serving St. Bernard’s Catholic Church in Fairfield. Father Matzinger served as pastor in Madisonville for six years before he was assigned to Fairfield.

Bell Choir Rings in

Galveston

First United Methodist Church Ladies Bell Choir participated in the Dickens on the Strand festivities in Galveston Dec. 1 and 2. The handbell concert was estimated to be the largest congregation of handbells for a mass performance.

Dianne Murden directs the 15 member choir. Choir members are Wanda Koterba, Kathy Carruthers, Kay Neal, Cynthia Hale, Diana Deichmann, Karen Johnston;

Jeri McBay, Leslie Scott, Leslie Haynes, Julie Skarbovig, Karen Micheletti, Jenny Arrington, Paula Wade, Ann Eppes and Claudette Hicks.

1999 Memorial Service Held

for Ex-Mayor

Memorial services were held Monday at First Baptist Church of Fairfield for former mayor William Finis “Billie” Daniel, 88, who died Thursday, Dec. 23.

Mr. Daniel served four terms as Fairfield mayor, 1978-86, and was on the Fairfield Hospital District board of directors until resigning the post earlier this year.

Mr. Daniel is survived by his wife of 65 years, Otie Bass Daniel, daughter Martha Darr of Fairfield, and son Billy Bass Daniel of Fairfield. GOP Chairman Stepping

Freestone County Republican party chairman Thomas Cameron of Fairfield steps down from his post Monday.

Cameron, who has served as county chairman for two years, will be replaced by Fairfield veterinarian Dr. Doug Sanford. Sanford had served as county GOP chairman for four years before Cameron accepted the post on Jan. 1, 1998. FJHS Names Students of

December students of the month at Fairfield junior high school studied perserverance and are Lacey Vincent, Kim Hudson, Jonathan Hazelton, Dustin Lane, Sarah Mullen, Timothy Flannery, Dorsey Brackens and Amanda Raye.

Teens Consider New

Year

As the end of 1999 approaches, a few Fairfield high school seniors were asked how they felt about the year 2000 and their part in it, and they offered some thoughts.

“It was a change that was good for the world, but unbelievable,” is what Talia Schutty will tell her grandchildren someday.

Kyle Austin says he’ll tell his grandchildren about the time when computers had limited capabilities.

Wendy Moore says, “Only the people on earth right now will be part of it for another 1000 years.”

LayShandria Rose remembers being in the first grade when the class took pictures as the future class of 2000.
