*During this same week in 1842 a determined group of Texans were splitting away from the orders of their own government, to cease a planned invasion of Mexico, and bull-headed to a man, carried out their original intentions. I wrote of this a year or two ago. We now know it as the Mier Expedition. You may not recognize it by this name…..But if I add the drawing of black beans….Yes, now you recall the tale…..A tall clay pot filled with white beans to which were added black beans. Those who drew the white would live, those who drew the black (every tenth man) would die. This would do irreparable damage to Texas-Mexico relations for decades. No doubt wrongs were committed by both sides for decades, but this would be one of those events never forgotten by Texans. It would add another chapter behind Goliad and the Alamo. The score would be evened up in a few short years during the Mexican-American War, when the Texas troops would become the most feared group participating in the invasion of Mexico.

Drunk man calls from IH- 45, reports just made a pit stop, took off, then noticed that one of their party apparently didn’t make it back into the vehicle before they took off. Drunk caller couldn’t advise where they made their pit stop, could be anywhere between Dallas and Houston! That reply did not narrow down our potential scope of search particularly. He said the guy missing was drunk too. Would not give a description of the vehicle they were in. Probably a little suspicious that they might be arrested….. Probably a well-founded suspicion on his part!

When Officers arrived he refused to remove his hands from his pockets, told Officers to get out the Taser ‘cause the fight was fixing to start. He was exactly correct…..a physical tussle did ensue due to his refusal to follow verbal commands and unwillingness to be handcuffed….And oh yes, the Officers didn’t forget his reference to the Taser…..One jolt and he was handcuffed. The last sentence above brings up a point that I really feel will be a waste of my time to address….But will anyway. Folks, if you get a divorce or break up with a member of the opposite sex (or, in this day and time, even the same sex), make the split, stop all contact, end the agreement. That seems so simple….but so many must get the last word in, dish out the last jab or punch below the belt…..I guess we humans just have this desire, every one of us. But use common sense. Least said is the best said. Get out of the relationship with as much dignity as you can, then leave ‘em completely alone. I mean COMPLETELY! Don’t go back for another pin prick, leave ‘em be.
Vehicle blocking owner’s driveway on Cedar, TPD Reed to same. Deputy Elom pens loose hosses, FM-489. FEMS to Boyd Unit, Officer with chest pains. Deputy Shaw to report of missing equipment, big mistake, other party was awarded same in divorce.
Well, that about draws it up for another week. By the time you read this Christmas Day will have slipped up on all of us. I hope for one and all that this is the Best Christmas you’ve ever had, young or old, tall or short. It is a day of Family and friends, good wishes and full tummies, gleeful darting of bright eyes by the young as well as the contented look in the eyes of every mother and grandmother, happy that their brood is together again. Peace on Earth, Good Will toward Men. But let us not forget those thousands of guys and gals half a world away, trying to get a hot Christmas Dinner, wearing a helmet and never far away from their weapon. Nor let us forget the birth of that small child, in a stable, two thousand plus years ago…….Merry Christmas to all, and to all a Good Night.
Until Next Week…..RALPH BILLINGS

Best of Freestone
