Against Westwood . . .

Fairfield junior high school Eagles basketball teams won three of four matchups last week against the Palestine Westwood Panthers.

The district games were played at home.

Eagles eighth grade A cagers struggled early, falling behind 6-11 the first period, but turned things around in the second period to take a 16-12 lead they would not relinquish.

The FJHS quintet tallied 13 points in the third period and seven in the fourth, giving up five and six, to post a 36-23 win.

“We got off to a slow start, but picked it up after the first quarter,” coach Lynn Caffey says.

“I thought we played pretty well, defensively,” the coach adds. “The big key was holding Westwood to one point in the second quarter.”

Scoring in double digits, 10 points, was Luke Rachel.

Also scoring were: Danny Cockerell, 7; Bryson Gates, 6; Larry Rose, 6; Byron Mireles, 3; Chris Lide, 2; and Wyatt Curry, 2.

Leading rebounders were Rachel, Cockerell and Curry.

Fairfield seventh grade A cagers started better, taking a 10-2 first period lead and working that to a 20-10 advantage at intermission.

The Eagles added eight points in the third period and 11 in the fourth, giving up two and five, for a 39-17 victory.

“These guys are getting better every day. They came out ready to play and never let up,” coach Clint Elliott says.

Hitting double digits with 10 points was Cam Adams.

Also scoring were: Demarcus Taylor, 9; Chance Carroll, 5; Dedrick Garner, 4; Ryan Kuhlman, 3; Keishaun Cunningham, 2; Michael Gibson, 2; Rahiem Hayes, 2; and Justin Morgan, 2.

In eighth grade B action, the Eagles were blanked 0- 4 the first period, then recovered to score eight points in the second period and cut the deficit to 10-6.

The team won the third period 7-4 and the fourth 5-4 to post a hard fought 20-18 win.

“Defensively, we did not play well all night and, offensively, we struggled with sloppy play,” coach Michael Posey reports.

“The kids played hard and have a win to show for it,” he adds.

Scoring for Fairfield were: Chris Munoz, 7; Michael Smaghee, 6; Trey Adams, 2; Cade Carroll, 2; Trenity Keeney, 2; and Bud Jones, 1.

The only Eagles loss came in the seventh grade B game.

The FJHS quintet was blanked 0-2 the first period and trailed 3-7 at the half in a low scoring affair.

Fairfield hit for three second half points and gave up another seven to fall 6-14.

“We fought hard but just couldn’t pull it out,” Elliott reports.

Scoring for the Eagles were: William Flathers, 2; Juan Ramirez, 2; and Conner Nix, 2.

The FJHS teams were scheduled to play at Crockett early this week and then break for the Christmas holiday. Next game is Jan. 7 when they host Palestine.
