FHS boys play Hudson
Last basketball season the Lufkin-Hudson Hornets knocked the Fairfield high school varsity Eagles out of the post season playoffs, but last week the Eagles got even a little bit.
The FHS varsity quintet handed Lufkin-Hudson a 49-37 defeat at a neutral site, Jacksonville College.
“It was a good win,” Eagles head coach Joey Worley says. “They are a year-round basketball school and are always in the playoffs.”
Worley reports that Lufkin-Hudson returned four starters from the team that knocked Fairfield out of the playoffs at the area round.
The Eagles, with a 3- pointer each from Tevin Green and Willie Tatum, took an 18-10 lead the first period but were held to six points in the second period which cut the lead to five points, 24-19, at the half.
Fairfield tallied 10 points the third period, holding Lufkin-Hudson to five, and added 15 points in the final stanza for the victory.
“The kids did a good job, defensively, against Hudson,” Worley says.
He points out that holding Lufkin-Hudson to just five points the third period gave the Eagles some breathing room with a 10- point advantage.
Midway through the fourth period the Eagles slowed the pace, taking only easy layup shots and free throws when their opponents were forced to foul in hopes of getting possession.
Fairfield cagers made seven out of 11 free throws in the final stanza.
In double digits for the Eagles were Green, 12 points, Chris Burns, 11, and Tatum, 10.
Also scoring were: Dominique Owens, 8; Evan Simpson, 4; and LaDarius Brackens, 4.
Fairfield shot 55 percent from the free throw line, making 11 of 20 attempts. Brackens was 100 percent on four free throws and Tatum made five of six.
Eagles junior varsity cagers lost to Lufkin- Hudson in a close 49-43 contest.
“We got off to a fast start but were slowed due to a lack of focus,” coach Jody Walker says. “The guys battled back to take the lead in the fourth quarter but were unable to finish the game with a victory.”
In freshmen action, the Eagles took a 14-4 lead the first period, but gave back part of that advantage to lead 19-12 at the half.
The frosh tallied six points in the third period and 13 in the fourth, giving up three and seven, to post a 38-22 win.
Reaching double digits were Cooper Cole, 15 points, and Will Akers, 14.
Also scoring were: Aaron Heers, 8; and Josh Munoz, 2.
The frosh shot 60 percent from the free throw line, making nine of 15 attempts. Cole was perfect on five charity tosses.
Fairfield plays at Kemp this Friday and compete Dec. 28-30 in the Whataburger Tournament in Fort Worth.
