*During this same week in 1941, belligerent countries were at war in Europe, Germany versus England and France. Our country was still at peace, for two years we had heard the reports detailing the invasion of Poland, the Low Countries, the take-over of Austria, etc. by Hitler’s eversurging tank columns and Stuka dive bombers. But as I said, the Americans had managed to stay free of the fighting, serving as the arsenal of supply for England and France, but at war with no one. However, with the dawning of Dec. 7th in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, on the tranquil island of Oahu in the Territory of Hawaii, we very suddenly became a direct participant in a quickly escalating world crisis, now known as the Second World War. On this date the Empire of Japan launched a sneak attack upon our military installations and Fleet in the vicinity of Pearl Harbor. This was a devastating event for our military. More bad news would follow from the Phillipines and other areas of Southeast Asia. Within one day we would formally declare war on Japan, by two more days we would also be at war with Germany and Italy. Our peaceful world turned into bedlam as young men throughout the country started marching off for training. At home, our Ladies were suddenly called upon to rapidly enter the work force, rationing of high-priority items would begin, every patriotic citizen each did his part for three and one half long years, and the mightiest industrial effort ever known rapidly went into high production, providing the machines of war for battle with the Axis Powers…..Author/Newsman Tom Brokaw’s “Greatest Generation.” Thank Heavens for the strength and resiliency of the American people! As well as all of those who boarded those troop trains for destinations unknown. For many, it would be only a one-way train ride, never to return, a Gold Star placed in a window, a posthumous Purple Heart and a memory slowly fading these six decades later. But let us never forget them, those who never returned as well as those who did. Ours will be an eternal debt, never payable. All our generation will ever be able to do in comparison is contribute toward the payment on the interest, we will never be able to fully repay the initial debt.
