Eagles are third at Zebra Classic

Fairfield high school Eagles varsity cagers won two games and lost one to finish third in the Zebra Classic tournament held over the weekend at Grandview.

The tourney, which featured eight teams, was won by LaVega, Alverado placed second and Itasca took consolation.

The Eagles opened Thursday against the Itasca Wampus Cats, taking a 57-37 decision.

Fairfield jumped out to a 19-7 lead the first period and added 13 points in the second for a 32-12 advantage at intermission.

The FHS quintet tallied 14 points the third period and 11 in the fourth, giving up nine and 16, for the win.

In double digits were Chris Burns, 16 points, and Tevin Green, 15. Burns counted a pair of first period 3-point shots toward his tally.

Also scoring were: Dominique Owens, 8; LaDarius Brackens, 4; and Evan Simpson, 3.

Second round action pitted the Eagles against eventual tourney champions LaVega and the FHS quintet got off to a slow start, trailing 4-22 the first period and 17-38 at the half.

Fairfield fought back, though, scoring 17 points in the third period to narrow the margin to 34-42, and outplayed LaVega in the final stanza before falling a point short at 53- 54.

Leading the offensive effort with 12 points each were Green and Owens, while teammate Willie Tatum reached double digits with 11 points.

Also scoring were: Burns, 8; Brackens, 7; and Simpson, 2.

The Eagles squared off against host Grandview in the game for third place, taking a 45-25 decision.

Offense was lacking early as Fairfield took a 5-1 first period lead, then the FHS quintet hit for 13 points in the second period for an 18-6 lead at halftime.

Eagle cagers tallied 11 third period points and 16 in the fourth, giving up seven and 12, for the win.

Reaching double digits were Green, 14, and Owens, 12.

Also scoring were: Vernard Evans, 7; Tatum, 7; Burns, 4; and Brackens, 1.

On the way to the championship title, LaVega beat Hillsboro and Fairfield.
