*During this same week in 1835, a volunteer group led by Ben Milam laid siege to the then-small town of San Antonio. This would be just one of the multiple precursors leading to the actual Revolution against the Mexican government, just a few months in the offing, early 1836. Milam, after whom Milam County is named, would not know that his efforts toward the capture of this small town would end in his death. A strange twist in the tale…..When we hear of the Alamo, we only think of Travis, Bowie, Crockett and their 181 men falling to Santa Anna’s men in March, 1836. Very few know that the Alamo had been the scene of previous carnage in 1835…..But the roles were exactly reversed! The Mexican Army under General Cos were in refuge within the Alamo, using it as their fortress, while their assailants ringing them in was a group of 300 Texans led by General Edward Burleson and tough old Ben Milam. It had been Burleson who was reluctant to lay siege to San Antonio, but fiery old Ben had turned to their men and uttered simple words in question form which would go down in Texas History and forever be linked to his name…..”Who’ll go with Old Ben Milam into San Antonio?”……..And to a man, they all followed him into the attack, ending with the loss of about 20 Texicans, as they chose to call themselves, and the capitulation and retreat of General Cos and his forces. But Cos and his men, just months hence, would be facing again the Texas forces, however from the opposite side of the fortress walls. The Mexican forces would be on the outside, the Texicans on the inside…..and we all know that story as well as its outcome.
