FJHS boys play Bears
Fairfield junior high school Eagles eighth grade teams won and the seventh grades lost last week in games with the Brownsboro Bears.
The district contests were played at Brownsboro.
Eagles eighth grade A cagers started fast, blanking the Bears 14-0 the first period and claiming a 24-4 lead at half-time.
Fairfield tallied 15 points the third period and 12 in the fourth, giving up just six in the final stanza, to win decisively 51-10.
"I thought we played very good defense, especially to start each half," coach Lynn Caffey says. "Bryson Gates and Larry Rose had great defensive games, and Danny Cockerell and Luke Rachel played very well underneath on the boards."
Reaching double digits with 10 points each were Cockerell and Cade Warren.
Also scoring were: Chris Lide, 8; Rose, 6; Gates, 6; Rachel, 4; Coy Pierce, 3; Jacob Gallegos, 2; and Wyatt Curry, 2.
"Chris Lide and Cade Warren had very good games coming off the bench. Overall, it was a great start to our season," Caffey says.
Leading rebounders were Cockerell and Rachel.
Eagles eighth grade B cagers trailed 6-10 the first period, then outscored the Bears to knot the contest 14-all at the half.
Fairfield dropped two points behind in the third period, 22-24, but came back in a 9-5 final stanza to win 31-29.
"What a game! It came down to the wire, but we prevailed," coach Michael Posey says. "The kids played hard all night and have a win to show for it."
In double digits, with 12 points, was Chris Munoz.
Also scoring were: Michael Taylor, 6; Dustin Elliott, 5; Michael Smaghee, 4; and Cade Carroll, 2.
The Eagles seventh grade A team fell behind 2- 4 in the first period, pulled within one at 14-15 by the half and were tied with Brownsboro 24-all at the end of the third period.
However, the Fairfield quintet was outscored by three points in the fourth period to drop a 28-31 decision.
"We played with great effort the whole game. With this being the first game, we saw and learned we still have a lot of work and a lot to learn," coach Clint Elliott says.
"I believe these guys will do nothing but get better," he adds.
Reaching double digits with 10 points was Raheim Hayes.
Also scoring were: Cam Adams, 4; Dedrick Garner, 4; Michael Gibson, 4; Chance Carroll, 2; Demarcus Taylor, 2; and Ryan Kuhlman, 2.
Fairfield seventh grade B cagers dropped an 8-30 decision to Brownsboro.
"This was a tough way to start out our season. I believe the kids were a little overwhelmed once the game started," Posey says.
"This was the first time most of these guys ever played a game. With time and practice they should reach their potential," he adds.
Scoring were: William Higgins, 4; Austin Keeney, 2; and William Flathers, 2.
The Eagles host area teams this Thursday- Saturday in the Fairfield Tournament.
