A respectable looking Lady walked into the drug store and informed the pharmacist she needed to buy some cyanide. The pharmacist inquired what use she would make of it and she replied that she was going to poison her husband! The pharmacist looked aghast and informed her that he positively would not sell her cyanide and further that he would be calling the police to report this incident. She calmly reached into her purse and removed a photograph, showing her husband and the pharmacist's wife all hugged together behind a tabletop at a club. The pharmacist looked closely at the picture and said, "Well, this is different…..You didn't tell me you had a prescription!" And before this goes around the Rumor Mill, the preceding did not happen. This is that special day of the year when we all give Thanks for the efforts of our Veterans. Whether on an island in the South Pacific or a hilltop in France, a jungled mountain in Viet Nam, a snowy hillside in Korea, convoy duty in the North Atlantic or the mountaintops of Iraq and Afghanistan…..We owe them a lot. Whatever their job….Infantry, helicopter mechanic, Quartermaster Clerk, coxswain, air crewman or cook in the mess hall at Ft. Polk….They all did their duty, as assigned, and did it very well. We are all so thankful for their service and patriotism. Thank You All, Gentlemen and Ladies, Thank You Very Much indeed!

Lady picks up stray dog at Mile 219 in Navarro County, next calls Freestone 911, asks what we want to do with it…..Ma'am, we appreciate your good intentions, but we don't really need another stray dog in our County. You being not from our County and just passing through, so to speak, you probably have no idea that you picked that dog up in Navarro County and are now trying to dump him out on Freestone to take care of…..Many Thanks, but No Thanks! You might want to carry him back where you picked him up. Like I said, we've got plenty, and I mean plenty.

Okay, I mentioned the Veteran's Remembrance Park a week or two ago and the upcoming festivities….Let me tell you, it was an old fashioned, flag waving, red, white and blue, patriotic event! A very large crowd on hand. It looked, upon driving up, like the crowd at the Teague Rodeo there were so many cars and people. The Teague Band was present in force, motorcyclists, flags, men in uniform…..Jackie French served as Master of Ceremonies, introducing the Speakers, Ms. Ginger Pickett did a wonderful job on the National Anthem, Mr. Alan Philpot, former Naval Officer spoke briefly and probably the most poignant moment was when Jackie French introduced retired Colonel Garland McSpadden, formerly his Commanding Officer in Viet Nam. Col. McSpadden gave an excellent history of U.S. involvement militarily since the Spanish American War. An excellent speaker, erect of carriage, knowledgeable, very military….and in full dress uniform once again after many years of retirement. The audience then sang "God Bless America", led once again by Ginger Pickett, and the ceremony ended with Jerry Ballew's rendition of Taps at closing. I saw more than one eye brimming with tears upon hearing those simple, mournful notes of the latter.

The crowd was large at the ceremony, estimated by Ned Burns at approximately 350, so the turnout was most impressive. Thanks should be noted that our local bank, managed by Mr. Jimmy Lawrence, paid for the rental fee on the large white tent, giving shaded seating for nearly half of the crowd.

Alcohol, Marijuana, over-long knife, Minor in Possession. One of those who fled, the expert swimmer to be exact, apparently rethought what he had done or just got quickly cold when he got out of the water on the other side….But, at any rate, he did come back to the scene later and surrender, and I admire him for his integrity. Total of four to Jail.

TPD Sykora arrests man after he refused to let his girlfriend exit the house by barring her exit, then she stated she would just call 911, whereupon he destroyed her phone. In Jail now, Unlawful Restraint and Interfere With Emergency Phone Call. Good Heavens feller, this is a No- Brainer…..You can't stop another adult from leaving anywhere, and you sure can't stop another from dialing 911 by destroying their phone…..Oh, yeah, I realize you did both, but look where you are at now, use your head for something other than a place to park a ball cap! Man calls from area Trailer Park, another just advised he is on his way to fight him, Dep. Robert Willis to same. Deputy Harrison to/from DePaul, mental transport.

Weather man says cold weather on its way. Time to start thinking about storing the water hoses, wrapping the outside pipes and raking leaves, another season approaches.

Until Next Week . . . RALPH BILLINGS
