Lady Eagles play bi-district match
FAIRFIELD SENIOR SPIKER McKenzie Beddingfield hits a shot in the bi-district playoff match against the Robinson Rockettes. Fairfield high school Lady Eagles dropped out of the post season playoff race last week with a bi-district loss to the Robinson Rockettes.
The final match ended a successful season in which the team posted a 27-14 overall record and went 9-1 in District 20-AAA, sharing the district championship with Brownsboro.
Bi-district was the final FHS match for eight members of the team, seniors Kiresten Cox, Sarah Linton, Kayse Kirgan, Jessica Gallegos, McKenzie Beddingfield, Riley Jo Davidson, Kaitlyn Palmquist and Becca Lyles.
Although the Lady Eagles were co-champions in district, they advanced as the second place team due to a playoff loss to Brownsboro to determine positions for the post season.
Robinson came into the match as the third place team from District 19-AAA.
Fairfield fell behind early in the first game with Robinson, trailing 0-7, then gained their composure but dropped the game 19-25.
"They did a good job fighting back as they did all season long," head coach Dennis Johnson says.
The second game was a different story as the Lady Eagles won 25-12 to tie the match.
"We played a little better. Robinson changed some things up alignmentwise and we were able to take advantage of it," Johnson reports.
The coach says that mistakes cost the team in a 23- 25 third game.
In what turned out to be a deciding fourth game, the Lady Eagles trailed by as much as six points before they tied the tally at 16-all.
Fairfield tied the game twice more, 19-all and 22- all, before losing 22-25.
The final three points went to Robinson when the Lady Eagles hit a serve into the net, a kill shot out the back of the court and were aced on the last point.
"We kept falling behind and catching up," Johnson says. "We kept fighting back."
On the front row, Miss Cox hit 15 kill shots in the match, Robin Davis hit 13 and Miss Beddingfield hit eight.
Setting the ball were Miss Kirgan, 23 assists, and Miss Linton, 13 assists.
Defensively, Miss Linton made five digs and Miss Lyles had four, while Misses Davis and Davidson blocked two shots each.
Johnson gives the allaround player honor in the bi-district match to the whole team.
Playing on the varsity all season and returning next year are juniors Olivia Gallegos, Shelby Wickens and Miss Davis.
Moving up from junior varsity for the bi-district match were sophomores Jordan Gandy, Kathleen Chappell and Sarah Rhoads.
