MEMBERS OF THE 2009 homecoming court at Wortham high school Friday night were: l-r, Kayla Doan, Lacey Hall, queen Chey Anne Bates, king Blake Ridge, Peyton Calame and Bradley Paradoski. Gridders on the Fairfield junior high school Eagles teams ended the 2009 season last week with wins across the board against Crockett Bulldog and Palestine Westwood Panther opponents.

The FJHS A squads played Crockett and the B squads faced Westwood.

The win by the Eagles eighth grade A team capped a perfect 8-0 season with a district championship title.

"Our guys came out and played a very explosive first half," coach Lynn Caffey reports.

Fairfield tallied four touchdowns in the first half and one in the second half to win decisively 34-6.

On the first play from scrimmage, Larry Rose raced 37 yards to score. The 2-point play failed but the Eagles were ahead early.

With 3:57 minutes left in the opening quarter, Rose struck from 57 yards out and tacked on the 2- point play for a 14-0 lead.

Caffey reports that Rose scored the first two times he touched the ball.

Late in the second quarter, Jacob Gallegos completed a pass to Bryson Gates that went 22 yards to the endzone. The 2- point play failed for a 20-0 advantage.

The Eagles then held the Bulldogs and Gates received the punt, racing 45 yards for a fourth Fairfield touchdown. Alex Ward added the 2-point run to give the team a 28- 0 lead at half-time.

In the final minute of the third quarter, Gallegos connected on a pass to Danny Cockerell, good for a 14-yard touchdown. The 2-point try failed.

Crockett tallied their only touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter.

Caffey reports that Ward was a workhorse carrying the ball throughout the contest.

He also notes that the offensive line did an outstanding job. Playing on the line were Luke Rachel, Wyatt Curry, Dillon Kirkpatrick, Keil Meredith, Sam Robinson and Alex Hoskins.

"It was a great defensive effort all around, led by Gates and Rachel with help from Jeremiah Simpson, Cade Warren and Jamie Velo," Caffey says.

In seventh grade A action, the Eagles scored in all four quarters to defeat the Bulldogs 36-6.

The win gives the team a 5-3 season record.

"These guys worked hard all season to get to where they are now. We expect great things from this bunch," coach Clint Elliott says.

First quarter action saw Michael Gibson score on a run of 30 yards and Chance Carroll reach the endzone from 37 yards out on a interception return. Dedrick Garner added a 2- point conversion after the first touchdown.

A 16-yard scoring run by Colby Minze in the second quarter and 2-point conversion by Garner staked the Eagles to a 20-0 lead at the half.

Minze struck paydirt a second time with a 16-yard run in the third quarter and Garner tacked on the 2-point conversion.

Final touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Garner returned a punt 55 yards to score. Michael Gibson added the 2-point conversion.

Crockett tallied its lone touchdown in the third quarter.

"We were able to score big points due to the great blocking of our offensive line, consisting of Thomas Martin, Juan Ramirez, Foster Cool, Quindon Oatman, Trinity Keeney and Josh Gallegos," Elliott reports.

The passing game was successful because of receptions by Tristian Hartley and Cam Adams.

Fairfield eighth grade B gridders scored in the second and fourth quarters to blank the Panthers 22-0.

"It was a great final game of the season for this group," Caffey says. "This was easily their best game. Both offense and defense played extremely well."

The Eagles scored their first touchdown with 4:44 remaining in the second quarter, on a 12-yard run by Byron Mireles. The 2- point try failed.

At the 5:40 mark of the fourth quarter, Donald O'Brien tallied from 19 yards out and Travis Beasley added the 2-point conversion.

With just 12 seconds remaining in the contest, Beasley found the endzone from 14 yards out and Mikey Taylor added the 2- point conversion.

Caffey reports that Mireles, Beasley and O'Brien ran well all night and quarterback Taylor completed three of four passes.

Providing running lanes and pass protection was the offensive line of Justin Ellison, Ju Ching Li, Branson Price, Trinity Keeney, Quinton Peterson, Zachary Peterson and Calvin Gilliland.

The defense played a strong game, giving up just one touchdown, with Ellison recovering two fumbles and Eric Franklin recovering one.

After a scoreless first half, the Eagles seventh grade B team found their stride and scored a pair of touchdowns and a safety to blank Westwood 16-0.

"It was really a tale of two halves for us tonight. The first half was marred by three fumbles and in the second half we really got things going," coach Michael Posey reports.

Fairfield scored a touchdown in the third quarter on a 45-yard run by Haynes, who then added the 2-point conversion to put the team on the board 8-0.

The Eagles added two more points when Higgins sacked the Westwood quarterback in the endzone for a safety.

Haynes added a second touchdown in the fourth quarter with a 32-yard run.

Providing protection up front on the offensive line were Cameron Hood, William Higgins, Dakota McCree, Zachary Roth, Kyle Grecu and Austin Lane, and receivers Jacob Wilkinson, Reece Hayes, Jacob McQueen, Garrett Teer and Connor Nix provided good blocking.

Running well were Keyshaun Cunningham, Demarcus Taylor and Brandon Lucero, and Justin Morgan quarterbacking the team to a win.

Defensive standouts were Josh Green, Drey Schaefer, William Flathers and Tyson Hopper.
