Lady Eagles receive recognition

Every member of the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles volleyball team earned All-District honors this season, and they all are on the Academic All- District team.

District 20-AAA selections were announced last week when Brownsboro fell to Bullard at the area playoffs level. Fairfield dropped out with a bi-district loss to Robinson and Palestine fell to Lorena at bi-district.

Fairfield and Brownsboro tied for the district title with 9-1 records and Palestine was third.

Lady Eagles singled out for special recognition were Kiresten Cox, district Offensive Player of the Year, and Sarah Linton, district Setter of the Year.

First team picks from the FHS squad were Robin Davis, Kayse Kirgan and McKenzie Beddingfield.

Making the second team was Jessica Gallegos.

Honorable mention were Becca Lyles, Kaitlyn Palmquist, Riley Jo Davidson and Shelby Wickens.

With the exceptions of Misses Davis and Wickens, the team was made up of senior students who were freshmen when head coach Dennis Johnson took over the program.

"They've been a real special group. They were freshmen when I got here and it's real special to see them grow up and become better players," the coach says.

Miss Cox is a 3-sport letterman and cheerleader, and earned four varsity letters in volleyball.

Last year she was named Offensive Player of the Year in 20-AAA.

An outside hitter, Miss Cox averaged 11.8 kill shots per match this season.

Miss Linton filled roles as a defensive specialist and setter, averaging 13.5 assists per match.

She earned four varsity volleyball letters and also is a member of the Lady Eagles varsity basketball team.

First team pick Miss Davis, a junior student, is a middle blocker and averaged 8.6 kills per match.

She was All-District honorable mention last year and competes in rodeo.

Miss Kirgan played outside hitter and setter, averaging 13 assists per game, and was District Co-Setter of the Year in 2008.

She earned four volleyball varsity letters and has earned three in softball, making first team in that sport last season.

Miss Beddingfield, an outside hitter, moved up from honorable mention a year ago to first team this season.

She earned two varsity letters in volleyball at FHS, runs track and competes in rodeo.

Miss Gallegos was a defensive specialist and earned two varsity letters. She also is a varsity softball player, making second team All-District in the outfield two years.

Miss Lyles was a defensive specialist, Miss Palmquist earned the libero jersey this season, Miss Davidson played middle blocker and Miss Wickens was a setter.

Academic All-District honors were earned by Misses Cox, Linton, Davis, Kirgan, Beddingfield, Jessica Gallegos, Lyles, Palmquist, Davidson, Wickens and Olivia Gallegos.

Picked for the All- District honors and teams were:

MVP—Hillary Shaffer, junior, Brownsboro.

Offensive Player—Kiresten Cox, senior, Fairfield.

Defensive Player—Shelbi Holt, senior, Brownsboro.

Setter—Sarah Linton, senior, Fairfield.

Newcomer of the Year—Daisy Martinez, junior, Athens.

Coach of the Year—Becky Daughtry, Brownsboro.

First team—Delaney Herrington, senior, Athens; Amye Scarborough, senior, Brownsboro; Chelsea Chambers, senior, Brownsboro; Jazz Hicks, junior, Palestine; Dana Whitehead, freshman, Palestine; Robin Davis, junior, Fairfield; Kayse Kirgan, senior, Fairfield; and McKenzie Beddingfield, senior, Fairfield.

Second team—Kandyce Tull, senior, Athens; Kendall Earp, senior, Crockett; Ashley Durham, junior, Palestine; Jala Johnson, sophomore, Palestine; Kalen Blair, junior, Westwood; Jessica Gallegos, senior, Fairfield; Abby Hernandez, senior, Brownsboro; and Catie Collins, senior, Brownsboro.
