LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
Dear Editor
It seems that one of your readers is a bit confused about where to place her anger about criticism directed towards the Talk Show entertainers on the cable TV channels.
She is also very misguided in her belief that what she is hearing from the "spooky" Mr. Beck is news as opposed to his slanted opinions.
I will let Mr. Beck speak for himself in addressing the question about whether he is an entertainer or a reporter of actual news, or not. These are direct quotes from Mr. Beck, himself, "I am an entertainer, a commentator rather than a reporter, I'm a rodeo clown."
I choose to take him at his word on his description of himself. I do believe him to be a Clown . . . His colleagues at Fox refer to his studio as "The Fear Chamber," because of his over exaggerated and hyped up theatrics formulated to scare his audiences.
He is described as having a mix of "outrage and an apocalyptic view of the future." Scary? You bet it is. That's his mantra and goal, to scare you.
He is of the mind set called the "paranoid style"( the word is PARANOID, people). The style of rhetoric that pushes the idea that the Masons, railroads, the Pope, elected officials and guys in black helicopters are in league to destroy us and the Country."
It is his goal to scare as many people as he can, causing many to become addicted to his story line, much as people become 'HOOKED' on the "Soap Operas." He creates a theory, develops the story line and no matter if it is factual or not, he blows it up, adds to it and preaches it day after day, until the watcher is indoctrinated into believing it is real. It is almost reminiscent of the Rev. Jim Jones, who led his followers to believe that the world beyond his jungle concentration camp, was against them and out to do them great harm. Conspiracy, Communism, be afraid. Sound familiar ? He then talked them into committing mass suicide and murder.
Mr. Beck is very dramatic and very much enjoys the money making power and influence he has over the uninformed, and he does his best to see how far he can push the line between truth and lie. He started out as a stand up comedian/Deejay (entertainer), I can't see that he has changed his format in any way, since. The only thing different is this, he pushes it as "NEWS" and he uses his vulnerable audience in a cruel way, for profit.
He is very successful at making money off of his outlandish skits and scripts. In fact, he makes gobs of money. He is involved in many enterprises, one of which is a web site. If you visit his web site, it cost you. Last year, visitors to his site forked out over $3 million dollars to further line his pockets. Oh, and the wildly opinionated fictional books he writes are money makers as well.
Mr. Beck owns the production company that produces his entertainment program that sold the syndication to Fox for about $23 million dollars, last year. He also sells a radio show.
Fact is, he makes a "butt load" of money, selling his skewed views and opinions. Big entertainment pays off, I'd say.
His outlandish and controversial opinions have caused him to lose jobs on occasion. It seems that not everybody is willing to buy his "entertaining" message of fear, anti-Government, Boogie Man theories and overt racial divisiveness. Some 80 sponsors have quit him this year, so as to avoid having their brand names from being associated with the content of his show.
As for Mr. Beck's suggestions that we are headed toward a Communist lead form of Government, I am reminded of the stupidity that flourished during the McCarthy era. A time of reckless, unsubstantiated and completely false accusations, black lists and hatred. His program of suspicion, accusation and downright bearing of false witness, ruined the careers and lives of many innocent people. I pray that Mr. Beck will not be successful in his attempts to divide us in this way and make us suspicious of each other. All to further increase his huge bank accounts.
We will be just fine, Americans and America will survive these tough times. Have a little faith in the goodness and benevolent characteristics that the majority of us Americans still have, and stop listening to the steady stream of misinformation, half truths, scary made up theories, "what if" stories and realize that you are being fed a giant load of, Glen Beck "Baloney"!!!
I think some people who are "fans" of the TV personalities and Talk Shows, need to know the meaning of the word "Fan".
The word "Fan" is derived from the word FANATIC, ie: extreme, uncritical zeal and unreasoning fervor.
