FJHS Eagles claim 3 games
Three wins out of four games went down in the record books for the Fairfield junior high school Eagles football teams when they met the Brownsboro Bears last week.
Fairfield hosted the district contests at Eagle Field.
Eighth grade A Eagles scored in the first, second and fourth quarters en route to a 22-0 shutout win over the Bears.
First score came on a catch-and-run from Jacob Gallegos to Bryson Gates that went for 70 yards. Gates added the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0 midway through the opening period.
In the second quarter Alex Ward broke free on a 65-yard touchdown romp and added the 2-point conversion on a pass from Gallegos to give the Eagles a 16-0 advantage at halftime.
Gates added the final score on an 85-yard run in the final stanza. The extra point try failed.
"The big play was the name of the game for us, scoring on plays of 70, 65 and 85 yards," coach Lynn Caffey says.
Quarterback Gallegos completed a couple of passes in the game while Gates and Ward ran the ball well.
"Defensively, we had a real good game shutting out Brownsboro completely," Caffey points out.
Getting his second interception of the season was Danny Cockerell, and Luke Rachel deflected a Bears pass.
"Our entire defensive front kept good pressure on all night," the coach reports.
The eighth grade A squad is posting a 5-0 record.
Fairfield eighth grade B gridders overcame an 0-12 deficit at half-time to claim a 14-12 victory.
"Brownsboro controlled the first half, scoring in each of the first two quarters," Caffey says. "We finally came around and played much better in the second half."
The Eagles cracked the scoring column at the end of the third quarter on a 25- yard run by Sergio Oregon. The extra point attempt failed.
Late in the fourth quarter, Travis Beasley crossed the goal line from two yards out and added the 2-point conversion for the win.
"The defense really came through, shutting down Brownsboro in the second half," Caffey notes.
In the seventh grade A game, the Eagles trailed 0-6 in the first period before settling down to claim a 20- 6 win.
Scoring for the FJHS squad were Dedrick Gardner on a 45-yard run, Chance Carroll on a 65-yard run and Michael Gibson on a 6-yard run.
"This was a battle all night. We had some costly turnovers, but we never let up," coach Clint Elliott says.
Fairfield seventh grade B gridders controlled the clock most of the game but could not get into the end- zone, dropping an 0-6 decision to Brownsboro.
"Crucial turnovers stalled several good drives," coach Michael Posey reports. "Defensively, we played sound all night."
The Bears scored on a long pass as time ran out in the fourth quarter.
"These guys have shown marked improvement each and every week. I am looking forward to our next game versus Athens," Posey says.
Fairfield plays Athens on the road Thursday evening.
