The Fairfield high school Eagles hope to get in the win column, and stay there for the next three games, when they hit the road Friday to meet the Athens Hornets.

Fairfield is 0-2 in District 20-AAA and Athens is 1-1, but wins in the next three games would likely propel the Eagles into the post season playoffs.

"We have to win the next three. It comes down to Athens, Crockett and Westwood and who can get three victories," FHS head coach Darrell Piske says.

Athens was picked to finish well in the district race this year but is posting only a 2-5 record for the season. Fairfield, on the other hand, is 0-7 with several narrow losses.

In the opening district game, the Eagles lost to Palestine on a last second field goal. Last week, fumbles stymied the Fairfield squad in a 14-33 loss to Brownsboro.

The Hornets lost their district opener to Crockett 21-12, but bounced back last week in a 27-10 victory over Palestine Westwood.

"Athens is a pretty good team," Piske says. "They are a mirror image of our offense. They are going to run the toss and not much veer."

Running the ball for the Hornets are fullback Justin Huffstetter and tailback Randall Gamble. Huffstetter gained 120 yards last week and a pair of touchdowns, including a 49-yard scoring romp.

Calling signals are senior Jack Barkley, providing the passing attack, and junior Nick Monmouth, who is a running threat. Barkley passed for two scores against Westwood.

Primary passing target is Courtney Whitehead, two touchdown catches last week.

On defense, the Hornets will line up in a 3-4 set and may shift to a 4-4 look. Athens defenders recorded nine quarterback sacks and two interceptions last week.

The Eagles had a hard time holding on to the fooball last week, fumbling four times and giving up two interceptions, but tallied more yards on offense than Brownsboro.

The services of running back/linebacker Darian Scott were lost for the season when he sustained a broken leg early in the game.

"We have to win this one. It's pretty simple now," Piske says.

Brownsboro and Palestine are leading the district race with 2-0 records and face each other this week.

Sitting at 1-1 are Athens and Crockett, while Fairfield and Westwood are both 0-2.

"We play hard, now we have to put the hard with the smart," Piske says.

The varsity game starts at 7:30 p.m. at Athens.
