Lady Eagles notch pair of district wins
LADY EAGLES VARSITY spiker Kiresten Cox flies high to hit a kill shot against the Palestine Westwood Lady Panthers. The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team extended its District 20-AAA mark to 3-0 last week with wins against Brownsboro and Palestine Westwood.
Junior varsity spikers lost twice and the freshmen team split decisions.
"We're 3-0 and are happy about that," FHS head coach Dennis Johnson says. "We are trying to survive district and everybody is looking to beat us."
The Lady Eagles went 10-0 last season to win the district title and are working to repeat that achievement.
Early last week at Brownsboro, the Fairfield varsity squad won the first two games 25-19, 25-17, gave up the next two 17-25, 17-25 and rallied to take the deciding fifth game 16- 14 to win the match.
"We fought hard to get a lead, and kept fighting. Brownsboro is always a tough place to play," Johnson says.
On the front row, Kiresten Cox hit 17 kill shots, Robin Davis had 13 and McKenzie Beddingfield hit seven. Assists were provided by setters Kayse Kirgan, 20, and Sarah Linton, 17.
Top servers were Miss Kirgan, 31 with no misses and four aces, and Kaitlyn Palmquist, 13 with no misses and an ace.
Defensively, Becca Lyles made seven digs, Riley Jo Davidson blocked two shots and Miss Davis blocked a shot.
Selected best all-around player in the match was Miss Kirgan.
The Lady Eagles varsity made short work of Westwood in a match played in Fairfield, winning in three games 25-17, 25-11, 25-10.
Top servers were Miss Palmquist, 25 and four aces, Miss Kirgan, 12, and Miss Linton, seven with an ace.
Miss Davis hit 12 kill shots and Miss Cox hit eight, with assists provided by Miss Kirgan, 15, and Miss Linton, 10.
On defense, Miss Cox made eight digs and Miss Palmquist had seven, and Miss Davis blocked a shot.
Picked best all-around was Miss Palmquist.
In freshmen action, the Lady Eagles beat Brownsboro in three games 14-25, 25-17, 25-22.
Kill leaders were Amy Lansford and Amanda Drake, and assist leaders were Kassi Floyd, Hannah Dodds and Katie Gardner.
Best defensive players were Katie Berger, Miss Dodds and Sadie Schaefer, and best servers were Mikeisha Hudson and Miss Gardner.
The Lady Eagles frosh fell in two games to Westwood 23-25, 22-25.
"Too many missed serves will hurt a team during the game," coach LaDonna Brackens says.
Kill leaders were Misses Lansford and Drake and assist leaders were Misses Floyd and Dodds.
Top server was Miss Floyd and best defensive player was Miss Dodds.
Fairfield jv spikers fell to Brownsboro in three games 16-25, 25-22, 22-25, and lost to Westwood in three, 20-25, 25-10, 20-25.
Best defensive players were Ashley Whatley, Erica Flori and Sarah Rhoads, and top servers were Miss Flori, Fruncheska Daniels and Kendall Dotson.
Leading hitters were Riley Vaclavik and Jordan Gandy, and best setters were Miss Dotson and Kathleen Chappell.
The Lady Eagles were scheduled to host Athens early this week, host Palestine on Friday and host Crockett on Tuesday.
