FJHS boys beat Crockett
The Eagles football teams at Fairfield junior high school won two games by big margins against the Crockett Bulldogs and also played the Wortham Bulldogs.
Fairfield hosted the games last Thursday.
Eagles eighth grade A Eagles recorded the biggest blowout, 54-0.
Receiving the opening kickoff, Alex Ward raced 65 yards for a quick touchdown and Larry Rose added the 2-point conversion for an immediate 8-0 lead.
Less than midway through the first quarter, the Eagles scored on a 16- yard pass from Jacob Gallegos to Bryson Gates. Rose added another two points for a 16-0 tally.
Fairfield scored a third time in the first quarter, on a 27-yard run by Ward. The 2-point conversion failed for a 22-0 score.
In the second quarter, Gates broke loose for a 53- yard scoring run and Rose added the two points, running the score to 30-0.
Just under two minutes later, the Eagles struck again when Danny Cockerell picked off a Crockett pass and raced 40 yards for a touchdown. Rose ran the 2-point try to provide a 38-0 cushion.
Defensive player Dillen Kilpatrick recovered a Bulldogs fumble as time was running out in the first half and Rose scored from four yards out at the :55 second mark. Rose also added the 2-point conversion, giving the Eagles a 46-0 as the half ended.
Fairfield backed off during the second half, scoring the final touchdown in the fourth quarter on a 26-yard run by Rose, set up with a fumble recovery by Alex Hoskins. Gates added the 2-point play for the 54-0 final score.
"We got started off great with the opening kickoff return for a touchdown, then hit a quick pass for a touchdown on our first possession," coach Lynn Caffey reports. "After that, we pretty much controlled the game."
"We had a very good game all around," he adds.
The FJHS seventh grade A gridders were not as prolific as the eighth grade A, but still recorded a lopsided 40-0 shutout of the Crockett Bulldogs.
Fairfield got its first touchdown with 1:21 remaining in the opening quarter on a 1-yard plunge by Chance Carroll. The 2- point conversion by Michael Gibson provided an 8-0 lead.
The Eagles tallied again at the 6:07 mark of the second quarter on an 18-yard run by Carroll, with Tristian Hartley adding the 2-point conversion.
With :47 left in the half, Hartley scored from 11 yards out and added the 2- point conversion to give the Eagles a 20-0 lead at half-time.
Fairfield found the endzone again when Dedrick Garner broke free for a 55- yard touchdown scamper in the third quarter. Gibson made it 32-0 with a 2-point conversion.
In the fourth quarter, Ryan Kuhlman scored from nine yards out and Carroll added the two points for the final tally.
"Our seventh graders did a very good job. They played with a lot of confidence and we had several sustained drives that ended in scores," Caffey reports.
"Our kids did a good job of ball control and played very good defense," he adds.
The eighth grade B Eagles fell by a 0-36 score to the Wortham Bulldogs.
"These guys fought hard all night long," coach Clint Elliott says.
Fairfield seventh grade B gridders dropped a 6-26 decision to Wortham.
Scoring for the Eagles on a 55-yard run was Raheem Hayes.
"This was a good Wortham seventh grade team. They really came out to play," coach Michael Posey says.
"Our guys are still learning the system and should keep showing signs of improvement," he adds.
Defensive standouts were Zachary Edwards- Roth and Conner Nix.
The junior high Eagles have an open date this week and start district Oct. 8 at home against Palestine.
