Subvarsity Eagles split grid decisions

Against Gatesville Hornets . . .

The Fairfield Eagles freshman football team scored another win, but the junior varsity squad came up short in gridiron action against the Gatesville Hornets.

The games were played at Eagle Field. Jv action was called off at half-time because of lightning in the area.

Eagles freshmen took the opening kickoff at their own 40 yard line and drove downfield to score on a 17-yard fun up the middle by Cody Sell. Jacob Judd kicked the extra point for a quick 7-0 lead.

In the second quarter, quarterback Aaron Cain connected on a pass to Cooper Cole that turned into a 60-yard touchdown play. The kick by Judd made it 14-0.

On defense, Cain put a hit on a Gatesville running back, causing a fumble recovered by Sell at the Eagles 29 yard line, then Andre Welch broke free for a 71-yard scoring sprint. Judd split the uprights for a 21-0 lead with 4:15 minutes left in the half.

The Hornets scored on a 21-yard run and kicked the extra point for a 21-7 tally, and the Eagles went to work immediately when Welch returned the ensuing kickoff to the Gatesville 34.

With one second remaining on the clock before half-time, Cain threw deep to Cole who hauled the ball in with one hand over a defender in the end zone for another touchdown. The extra point boot was wide, giving the Eagles a 27-6 advantage.

Gatesville took the third quarter kickoff and the Eagles held them on downs to start an 18-play scoring drive that covered 72 yards and ate up the rest of the quarter.

Fairfield scored on a 4- yard run by Sell and Judd added the PAT for a 34-6 tally.

Coach Bill Crawford credits the success of the time-eating drive to blocking by Will Doyle, Zach Pratt, Deonte Carr, Will Akers, Colton Henson and Charles Davis.

The Hornets scored again with 57 seconds left in the game, giving the Eagles a 34-13 victory.

In jv action, the Eagles trailed 0-7 when the game was called a half-time because of lightning.

Coach Joey Worley reports that the Fairfield defense played well, giving up the lone score with one second left on the clock before the half.

"The kids worked hard, very hard. We just came up short," Worley says.
