FJHS gridders win 3 contests
Fairfield junior high school Eagles gridders won three of four contests last week against the Gatesville Hornets.
The games were played on the road and the eighth grade A game was called in the third quarter because of inclement weather.
The eighth grade A Eagles scored twice in the opening quarter to hand the Hornets a loss by the time play was stopped at the 6-minute mark of the third quarter.
First touchdown was on a 37-yard pass from Jacob Gallegos to Bryson Gates, and the second came on a 61-yard punt return by Chris Lide.
"Overall, the guys played well. They got a little fatigued but fought through to hold the Hornets scoreless and come away with a good win," coach Jody Walker reports.
The FJHS eighth grade B squad had to come from behind to claim a 14-8 win over Gatesville.
Fairfield tallied in the second quarter on a 78- yard kickoff return by Jamie Velo, but trailed 6-8 at the half.
The go-ahead touchdown came with two minutes left in the game on an 11-yard run by Byron Mireles, and Velo added the 2-point conversion.
"These young Eagles fought through some adversity to come away with a good win. All the guys played good," Walker says.
Fairfield seventh grade A gridders followed the lead of the eighth grade A team by scoring early and shutting out Gatesville for a 14-0 win. Both touchdowns were in the first quarter.
Scoring were Aaron Mitchell on a 60-yard run and Chance Carroll on a 40-yard interception return.
"These guys had a great opening night. We played well on both sides of the ball," coach Clint Elliott says.
The lone loss was in a 0- 20 contest played by the FJHS seventh grade B squad.
"We came out wide-eyed and, basically, not ready to play, mentally," coach Michael Posey reports.
"This team will improve with more practice," he adds.
The FJHS teams play at Rusk this Thursday.
