FHS varsity spikers split decisions
LADY EAGLES VARSITY spiker Becca Lyles stretches out but can't quite get to a shot by North Forney. The Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team split decisions last week in close matches with North Forney and Mexia.
A win and a loss puts the FHS season record at 15-9 with four non district matches remaining on the schedule until the start of 20-AAA competion Sept. 25 at Crockett.
Against North Forney, the Lady Eagles dropped the first two games by close scores 21-25, 23-25, won the third 25-16 and fell 22- 25 in the fourth to end the match.
"Every game was close and we had our chances," Fairfield head coach Dennis Johnson says. "They were a pretty good team."
Leading the offensive effort for the Lady Eagles were Kiresten Cox, 15 kills, and Robin Davis, 8, with setters Sarah Linton and Kayse Kirgan providing 16 assists each.
From the serving line, Becca Lyles hit 17 without a miss, including a pair of aces, and Miss Linton hit 19 without a miss.
On defense, Miss Lyles made five digs and Jessica Gallegos made four.
Picked best all-around in the match was Miss Cox.
The Lady Eagles made short work of the Mexia Ladycats, winning the match in three straight games 27-25, 25-21, 25-20.
"We were excited about the Mexia win. It had been a couple or three years since we beat them," Johnson reports.
Front row players Misses Cox and Davis hit 15 and 10 kill shots, respectively, with Miss Linton making 14 assists and Miss Kirgan contributing 11.
Miss Linton served 22 times without a miss, including seven aces, and Miss Lyles made 16 serves with five aces.
Defensively, Misses Lyles and Kaitlyn Palmquist had eight digs each, and Miss Davis blocked four shots.
Best all-around players in the match were Misses Davis and Linton.
In subvarsity action, the Lady Eagles jv lost to Mexia and Forney, while the frosh squad fell to Forney and claimed one win in three matches with Mexia.
In the Forney match, the Fairfield jv dropped the first game 15-25, won the second 25-20 and fell 18- 25 in the tie-breaker game.
The Lady Eagles jv played close throughout with Mexia, winning the first game 25-13, losing a close second game 23-25 and battling into overtime before dropping the tiebreaker 24-26.
Freshmen spikers were bested by Forney in two games 15-25, 20-25.
Kill leaders were Amy Lansford and Melissa Lopez, with assists provided by Kassi Floyd and Natalie Neill.
Top servers were Mikeisha Hudson and Katie Gardner, best defensive players were Amanda Drake and Katie Berger, and best all-around was Miss Floyd.
Lady Eagles freshmen played a total of three "A" and "B" team matches against Mexia, winning one.
The Fairfield frosh win came with the Lady Eagles "B" squad on the court, taking the match in three games 25-18, 24-26, 15-10.
Kill leaders were Hannah Dodds, Jillian Peterson and Sadie Schaefer, with assists by Ashley Kethley and Miss Dodds.
Best defensive players were Misses Dodds and Schaefer, and top servers were Hannah Worley, Sarah Sloat and Destaney Weaver.
The frosh "B" squad fell in two close games to Mexia "B" 21-25, 20-25.
Kill leaders was Miss Sloat, with assists by Misses Kethley and Miss Dodds.
Top servers were Misses Sloat, Worley and Danielle Ransom, best defensive players were Misses Dodds and Kethley, and best allaround was Miss Dodds.
The frosh "A" squad played three games against Mexia, losing 23-25, 5-25, 4-15.
Kill leaders were Misses Lopez and Lansford, with assists by Miss Floyd.
Top servers were Misses Floyd, Lansford and Gardner, and best defensive players were Misses Neill and Berger.
"These girls are improving on a weekly basis. They played hard and competed well," coach LaDonna Brackens says.
Lady Eagles volleyball teams were scheduled to host Franklin early this week, head to Gatesville on Friday and play at Groesbeck on Tuesday.
