Varsity at Leon . . .

Claiming four wins against a pair of losses, the Fairfield high school Lady Eagles varsity volleyball team won consolation over the weekend in the Leon Tournament.

"It was real competitive. There weren't any teams that were real bad," FHS head coach Dennis Johnson says.

The Lady Eagles counted two wins each in pool and bracket play.

First opponent in pool play, Oakwood, fell to the Lady Eagles by a good margin, 25-19, 25-12.

Leading servers for the FHS team were Kayse Kirgan, 11 with no misses, and Becca Lyles, two aces.

On the front row, Kiresten Cox hit 10 kill shots and Robin Davis hit eight, with setters Kayse Kirgan and Sarah Linton providing nine assists apiece.

Defensively, Kaitlyn Palmquist made four digs and Jessica Gallegos made three.

All-around player was Miss Cox.

The Lady Eagles struggled against Lorena, falling in a pair of close games 21- 15, 23-25.

Top servers were Misses Lyles and Kirgan, nine each without a miss, and best defensive players were Miss Cox, 10 digs, and Miss Lyles, six digs.

Offensively, Miss Cox hit 10 kill shots and Miss Davis hit seven, with setters Miss Kirgan providing 10 assists and Miss Linton making nine.

Best all-around player was Miss Kirgan.

In the final pool match, the Lady Eagles bested Frankston 25-15, 25-20.

From the serving line, Miss Linton hit six without a miss, including an ace, and Miss Cox pounded four aces.

Kill leaders were Miss Cox, seven, and Miss Davis, six, with assists provided by Miss Linton, 12, and Miss Kirgan, 6.

On defense, Misses Lyles and Palmquist made six digs each.

Best all-around player was Miss Linton.

Fairfield faced Centerville in the first bracket match and fell in two games 16-25, 12-25.

Top servers were Miss Gallegos, 10 without a miss, and Miss Cox, three aces.

Miss Davis hit six kill shots and Miss Cox hit three, with servers Miss Linton and Miss Kirgan providing seven and four assists, respectively. Miss Palmquist made two digs to lead that department.

All-around player honors went to Miss Davis.

The Lady Eagles returned to winning form in a 2-game match against Conroe Caney Creek, 25-18, 25-22.

From the serving line, Miss Lyles slammed three aces and Miss Linton hit one.

Kill leaders were Miss Cox, 11, and Miss Davis, four, with assists from Miss Kirgan, nine, and Miss Linton, six.

Defensively, Miss Cox made six digs and Miss Lyles made five.

Best all-around player was Miss Cox.

For the consolation award, the FHS team downed Milano in two games 25-18, 25-23.

Miss Lyles hit 12 serves without a miss and Miss Palmquist served up an ace.

On the front row, Miss Cox hit 12 kill shots and Olivia Gallegos hit six, with assists provided by Miss Kirgan, 15, and Miss Linton, eight.

Making a dozen digs was Miss Lyles, and Miss Cox made eight.

All-around players honors went to Miss Lyles.

"I thought we did really well," Johnson says.
