Sales tax money decline reverses

Fairfield sales tax revenue rose 19.29 percent in August from a year ago, figures released last week by the Texas Comptroller show.

The city receives a check this month for $244,297, up from the $204,789 reimbursed by the comptroller last August.

The check reflects taxes collected on June retail sales and reported in July.

So far this year, Fairfield has been reimbursed $1.72 million, a 3.24 percent increase from the $1.66 million received during the same period in 2008.

Statewide, the 1,135 cities that collect the sales tax receive a total of $368 million, a 6.53 percent decline from last August.

Reimbursements to date are down 2.33 percent, to $2.6 billion, across Texas this year.

The City of Teague receives $54,789 this month, up 14.18 percent from the $47,981 reimbursed last August. For the year, payments to Teague are up 12.02 percent, from $353,198 to $395,686.

Wortham is reimbursed $17,871 this month, up 44.88 percent from the August 2008 payment of $12,335. Checks to Wortham this year have increased a slight .95 percent.

Payment to Streetman is $3,724 this month, up 53.26 percent from the $2,430 received last August. For the year, payments to Streetman have increased 44.09 percent, from $13,529 to $19,496.

Communities in Anderson county are reimbursed a total of $599,826 this month, down 23.95 percent from the $788,736 received last August. Payments this year are down 3.16 percent, from $4.4 million to $4.3 million.

In Leon county, August payments total $127,490, down 14.6 percent from the $149,291 received a year ago. Payments in 2009 are up 10.55 percent in Leon county, from $935,408 to $1 million.

Checks in Limestone county total $326,283 this month, an increase of 4.2 percent from the $313,126 received last August. For the year, sales tax reimbursements in Limestone county are up .95 percent, from $2.33 million to $2.35 million.

Navarro county sales tax checks tally $530,783 this month, down 16.69 percent from the August 2008 total of $637,190. For the year, payments are down 4.12 percent, from $3.8 million to $3.6 million.

Houston receives the biggest August check, $45.2 million, reflecting a 14.53 percent decline in sales tax revenue for the month.

The City of Dallas is reimbursed $20.3 million, a drop of 14.53 percent from a year ago.
